WEST VALLEY CITY, UTAH - Mathieu Aubin scored the game-winning goal on a power play in the third period, as the Utah Grizzlies overcame a 3-1 Alaska lead to down the Aces 5-3 Wednesday night at the Maverik Center.
The loss stops a 3-game road point streak for Alaska.
Utah drew first blood at the 5 minute mark of the first period on a power play goal by rookie Ralph Cuddemi, his 26th goal of the season.
However, the Aces came right back with a goal by Danny Moynihan at 13:47, a shot from the slot that leaked through Grizzlies goaltender Ryan Faragher and into the net. The unassisted tally was Moynihan's 18th goal of the season.
Alaska got a power play goal by Tim Wallace at 17:14. Wallace was on the left side of the offensive zone, made a circle around the horn and Stephen Perfetto found him with a back-door pass. Wallace tipped the puck home and it was 2-1 Alaska after one period.
Shots were 12-4 Aces after one.
Brad Navin gave the Aces breathing room at 5:39 of the second period with his seventh goal of the season, first as an Ace.
The tide turned though later in the second. Utah's Zac Larraza popped in another power play goal at 16:57, and the period ended with a 3-2 Aces lead, but the momentum clearly with the Grizzlies.
Shots after two: 20-19 Alaska.
The third period was all Utah. Eric Higby at 1:21, Aubin at 3:10 and an empty-netter at 18:50 by Michael Pelech spelled doom for Alaska, who ended up outshooting Utah 28-27.
Faragher finished with 25 saves for Utah. Alaska's Kevin Carr stopped 23 shots.
Alaska was 1-3 on the power play. Utah was 3-4.
The Aces and Grizzlies will play again Friday and Saturday at 5:10pm AST at the Maverik Center.
