Brampton Steelheads News Release
Mississauga, ON - The Mississauga Steelheads hosted the Peterborough Petes for their second of three games this week that will close out the regular season. Ottawa (73 points), Mississauga (71 points) and Peterborough (71 points) continue to jockey for home ice advantage in the post season, and with a 5-3 win tonight, the Steelheads picked up a crucial two-points and improved to 33-29-2-3, moving into sixth place in the Eastern Conference.
The Petes would strike first, capitalizing on an early power play opportunity as Kyle Jenkins and Eric Cornel set up Hunter Garlent who sniped one by Steelheads goaltender, Jack Flinn for an early 1-0 lead. The Steelheads were quick to respond as Jared Walsh found the back of the net from Mike McLeod and Stefan LeBlanc. Daniel Muzito-Bagenda gave the Steelheads their first lead of the game at 6:41 as he tucked the puck behind Mancina. Peterborough's Logan DeNoble evened the score late in the frame, before Sean Day restored the Steelheads lead heading into the first intermission. Everett Clark had the assist on Day's sixth of the season as Mississauga led 3-2 after the first.
Not to be outdone, the Petes evened the score again at 7:19 of the second as Hunter Garlent scored his second of the night and 40th of the season to make it 3-3. The game remained knotted after 40 minutes of play, setting up an exciting third period with each team vying for two points.
The Steelheads were able to pull away in the third as Muzito-Bagenda scored his second of the night, and eventual game winner to give the Steelheads a 4-3 lead approaching the midway point of the final frame. Mike McLeod and Stephen Gibson picked up the assists on DMB's 20th of the season. With Nick Grima in the box serving two minutes for slashing, the Steelheads were able to add an insurance marker from Nic Hague just four seconds into the power play. Josh Burnside and Muzito-Bagenda recorded the assists on Hague's 14th of the season as the Steelheads topped the Petes 5-3.
Mississauga will close out the regular season on Sunday, March 20th when they host the Niagara IceDogs for a 2:00 pm start at the Hershey Centre.
