
Spirit Wrap up Regular Season in 6-4 Loss to Sarnia

SAGINAW, MI. - On Saturday night, the Saginaw Spirit welcomed the Sarnia Sting to The Dow Event Center to wrap up the 2015-16 regular season. Before the game, the 5,580 fans and the Saginaw Spirit staff honored Spirit overage players Connor Brown and Will Petschenig. The two veterans later went on to each scored in their final regular season game in the Ontario Hockey League. The Sting scored five goals in the third period to erase a three-goal deficit and secure a 6-4 win over the Saginaw Spirit.
A fast paced period for the Spirit stunned the Sting, despite an early goal for Anthony Salinitri. At 5:37 of the first period, Sarnia went up 1-0 over the Spirit on Salinitri's 15th goal of the season. From then on it was all Saginaw, scoring three consecutive goals before the end of the period. Former Sarnia Sting member Hayden Hodgson tied things up at one goal apiece at 7:52 of the period. Blake Clarke and Michael Holmes registered the assists. Next on the score sheet for the Spirit was overager Will Petschenig. Petschenig notched his fifth goal of the season and gained the Spirit their first lead of the evening. Jesse Barwell and Blake Clarke picked up the helpers on the play. At 18:54 of the opening frame, Blake Clarke put home his third point of the night to cushion the Spirit's 3-1 lead heading into the second period. Jesse Barwell recorded his second point of the evening picking up an assist, along with line mate Cole Coskey. Saginaw outshot the Spirit by one in the first period, 12-11.
The Spirit kept the offensive pressure rolling, as they extended their lead to three-goals early in the second period. Spirit captain Connor Brown tipped in a shot from Rocky Kaura to push the Spirit up 4-1 over the Sting. Matthew Kreis was also credited with an assist on the play. Evan Cormier continued to shine well into the second period, stopping the Sting from cutting into the Spirit's lead on numerous accounts. Sarnia outshot the Spirit 14-7 in the second period.
Things took a quick turn of events in the third period, as the Sting erased a three-goal deficit and added two more goals en route to a 6-4 win over the Saginaw Spirit. Travis Konecny scored twice, while Anthony Salinitri, Jordan Kyrou, and Jakob Chychrun each earned a spot on the score sheet respectively. Final shots on goal favored the Sarnia Sting, 49-27.
