GENEVA, ILLINOIS - Austen Long tallied two goals Friday as the Chicago Steel (22-24-4-3, 51 points) defeated the Green Bay Gamblers (32-15-4-3, 71 points) Friday at Fox Valley Ice Arena. Max Zimmer added a goal and an assist, while John Lethemon stopped 36 of 37 shots in net for Chicago. Friday's win was the Steel's first victory in six matchups this season with Green Bay.
Chicago opened up the scoring with just two seconds remaining in the first period. Samuel Bucek found a bouncing puck just inside the blue line, stickhandled away from traffic and sent the puck toward the net. Long redirected the puck past the stick side of Gamblers netminder Kevin Reich to give the Steel a 1-0 lead at the first intermission.
Early in the second period, Chicago's Max Zimmer denied a Green Bay clearing attempt at the left point and sent a quick release on net, bouncing the puck in off the right post. The Gamblers got on the board later in the period, as defenseman Cam Lee stickhandled into the slot and picked the upper corner over the glove of Steel goalie John Lethemon. However, Chicago regained its two-goal lead thanks to a shorthanded tally created by Long. After Reich caught Long's shot from the right wing, the Green Bay goaltender tried to rush the puck around behind his net to avoid a defensive zone faceoff while on the power play. Reich was pressured by a net-driving Long, and the slid around to his right, accidentally tossing the puck into the back of his net in the process.
In the third period, Chicago's Jake Jaremko tallied his team-leading 18th goal of the season. Jaremko jammed his own rebound past Reich to secure the win.
The Steel celebrate Chicago hockey Saturday with Chicago Blackhawks Night against the Lincoln Stars.
