Bucs Blank Tri-City with Strong Third Period
March 25, 2016 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Des Moines Buccaneers News Release
Both teams were held scoreless through the first two periods but Buccaneers goaltender Nick MacNab held down the fort long enough for the Buccaneers offense to get going and Des Moines skated off the ice with a 3-0 road victory over Tri-City Friday night.
Although Tri-City was unable to score opening 20 minutes, the Storm started fast out of the gate, getting 7 of the first 8 shots on goal. Those numbers would start to get closer to even as the period went on and the two teams each had one power play opportunity in the period. MacNab made 11 saves in the period while Storm goalie Jake Kielly stopped all 6 shots he saw in the opening frame.
The second period was similar to the first, though the Storm were able to put even more pressure on MacNab but MacNab stood tall to the task by making 17 saves in the period. Kielly had 7 saves and the two teams remained scoreless. Tri-City had the only power play opportunity in the middle stanza but it wasn't enough to get on the scoreboard.
Buccaneers affiliate member Mark Senden picked up his first USHL goal 3:30 into the third period when the left shot forward tried to move the puck to his forehand and that forced Kielly to dart to his right, but the puck didn't settle for Senden and instead slowly crawled over the goal line in the spot that Kielly had just vacated. Again Tri-City applied pressure as MacNab saw the most shots in the third period, but the Indianapolis, IN native made save after save, including 4 late in the game with his team down a man. Shortly after the penalty was killed off a faceoff at neutral ice set the stage for Tri-City to win the draw and attempt a D to D pass at their own blueline that was picked off by Zach Jordan. Jordan took the puck, split the D and on a partial breakaway beat Kielly for an unassisted goal at the 18:32 mark. Tri-City immediately pulled Kielly in favor of a sixth skater after the goal but Patrick Grasso took a feed from Alec Rauhauser between the Bucs' blueline and the center line and deposited it into the empty net to put a nail in the coffin at the 19:13 mark.
Nick MacNab made 18 saves in the third to end the game with 45 and his first USHL shutout. The Buccaneers will host the Storm tomorrow night back at Buccaneer Arena; the 11th annual Guns N Hoses game will take place at 1:30 PM with the puck drop between Des Moines and Tri-City at 7:05 PM.
