West Virginia Black Bears News Release

GAME ONE

Granville, W. Va. - To kick off another road series, the West Virginia Black Bears drop the first game with the Staten Island Yankees 1-0.

Both pitching staffs put on excellent performances, as the teams combined for only six hits in the game.

For the Black Bears, P Osvaldo Bido had a solid outing. The righty threw six innings of three-hit baseball, giving up only one run while striking out two batters and walking two others.

That lone run came in the bottom of the fourth inning, as the Yankees scored on an RBI triple to centerfield to put the score at 1-0.

The West Virginia bullpen did what they could to keep the visitors in the game. P Ryan Valdes threw a scoreless inning of relief in the seventh inning, followed by another scoreless fame from P Logan Stoelke.

Unfortunately, the Black Bears struggled at the plate. 3B Mike Gretler, 1B Luke Mangieri, and 2B Robbie Glendinning combined for three hits, as the rest of the West Virginia lineup struggled to get on base.

Unable to come back in the late innings, the Black Bears set their sights on game two to get back on track.

GAME TWO

After amassing an early lead, the West Virginia Black Bears came up short down the stretch to lose 3-2 to the State Island Yankees.

The Black Bears had a better showing offensively in game two, picking up two runs on five hits.

The first run came in the top of the third inning. With CF Travis Swaggerty on first base, 3B Mike Gretler crushed a double into the gap to put West Virginia ahead.

P Michael Flynn had his best start in a Black Bears uniform. Through four innings, the righty didn't allow a run on one hit, striking out three batters in the process.

Swaggerty provided the second run in the top of the fifth. His RBI-groundout gave West Virginia a 2-0 lead halfway through the contest.

The Yankees got on the board in the bottom of the inning on a groundout of their own to cut the Black Bears lead in half. Then in the sixth inning, Staten Island came through with an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Yankees took the lead. With a runner on third base, a sac-fly to centerfield put the home team on top, needing only three outs to secure a win.

The Black Bears made it interesting in the top of the ninth. 1B Luke Mangieri hit a double to put himself in scoring position, but three consecutive outs stranded Mangieri on base to complete the second game of the series.

GAME THREE

Wrapping up a six-game road trip, the West Virginia Black Bears lost to the Staten Island Yankees 6-3.

The Black Bears struggled over the course of the trip, going 1-5 away from Monongalia County Ballpark.

West Virginia did get on the board first to begin the game. With CF Travis Swaggerty on third base, 1B Luke Mangieri hit a ball in the infield that created a Staten Island fielding error, bringing Swaggerty home for an early 1-0 advantage.

The Black Bears also got an impressive outing from starting pitcher Aaron Shortridge. The righty went five innings, giving up one run on three hits and striking out nine batters in the process.

Shortridge's only earned run came in the fourth inning on an RBI single to tie the score at 1-1.

P Nicholas Economos also pitched well coming out of the West Virginia bullpen, putting up two scoreless frames with three strikeouts while giving up one hit.

Then in the bottom of the eighth inning, the floodgates opened for the Yankees. The home team poured in five runs on five hits to take a convincing 6-1 lead going into the ninth inning.

The Black Bears didn't go down without a fight. With runners on first and second, RF Brett Kinneman hit a double that put the score at 6-3. Threatening with two outs, the West Virginia comeback came up short on a pop fly to end the game.

After a long road trip, the Black Bears return home tomorrow night for a three-game series with the State College Spikes where they will transform into the West Virginia Moonshiners. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
