Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
NORWICH, Ct. - The Connecticut Tigers (15-15) took a 2-1 lead for good in the bottom of the eighth inning on a wild pitch and Mitchell Stalsberg picked up his first professional win with 2 1/3 hitless innings of relief against the Vermont Lake Monsters (15-15) on Monday night at Dodd Stadium.
Tigers first baseman Nick Ames led off the eighth inning against Oscar Tovar (Loss, 2-1) with a walk and Yomar Valentin replaced him as a pinch-runner. Following a walk and a groundout, Valentin reached third and later scored when Tovar skidded a wild pitch to the backstop that gave Connecticut the 2-1 lead.
In the top of the ninth, Stalsberg (Win, 1-0) stranded the tying run at second base by striking out Aaron Arruda to end the game. Tigers starter Gio Arriera took the no-decision despite allowing just two hits in 6 2/3 innings. Vermont shortstop Jeremy Eiermann hit his team-leading third home run of the year on a solo shot to left against Arriera in the fifth inning to tie the game at 1-1.
The Tigers broke a scoreless tie in the fourth beginning with a leadoff double by Sam McMillan, who quickly moved to third on a bunt single by Luke Sherley. McMillan made it 1-0 on an RBI flyout in foul ground by Dayton Dugas.
Sherley led Connecticut with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate and 18-year-old shortstop Wenceel Perez picked up his first base hit on a flyball single to left during his second game with the Connecticut Tigers.
Connecticut held the Lake Monsters to two hits on Monday; the fewest tallied against the Tigers since Vermont recorded one base in the eight-inning backend of a doubleheader on June 19 in Burlington.
The Tigers won four of six games on their longest homestand of the year while taking two of three games from their Stedler Division rivals to join the Lake Monsters in a third-place tie, three games behind the first-place Tri-City ValleyCats.
On Tuesday, the Tigers hit the road for their longest road trip of the year with three games at Hudson Valley followed by three games at Aberdeen. The series opener against the Hudson Valley Renegades is scheduled for Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. with Connecticut righty Chance Kirby (1-0, 0.00) making his second start for the Tigers after striking out 12 batters with one hit in his six-inning home debut against Batavia on July 11.
