-SPIKES MEET TIGERS TO FINISH HOMESTAND: The State College Spikes complete the back half of a six-game homestand at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park tonight as they play the final game of a three-game series against the Connecticut Tigers. State College is 6-11 against the Tigers all-time stretching back to their time in Oneonta, which ended in 2008.
-LAST GAME: Dan Gamache notched two runs batted in and Wes Freeman went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, but the Spikes' ninth-inning rally fell just short in a 6-4 defeat at the hands of the Connecticut Tigers on Paint the Park Pink night Saturday at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The Spikes took the field in special pink jerseys for the game on Paint the Park Pink Night, presented by the Mount Nittany Health System and the Centre Daily Times. Gamache, the Pirates' 2011 sixth-round draft pick out of Auburn, knocked in Freeman twice.
-HAFNER LOOKS FOR ANOTHER QUALITY START: Left-hander Mike Jefferson gets the ball for State College tonight. The Cincinnati, OH native was the Pirates' 22nd-round draft choice in 2011. Jefferson has not allowed an earned run over his last three starts, spanning 13 innings. The lefty got the win with a career-high five innings against Aberdeen Tuesday.
-SANZ STARTS FOR TIGERS TONIGHT: Connecticut right-hander Luis Sanz makes his 11th start of the year tonight for the Tigers. Sanz, a veteran of six minor league seasons in Venezuela and America, is second in the New York-Penn League in strikeouts with 57, and fifth in opponents' batting average with a .214 mark.
-FREEMAN TO GO TO NYPL ALL-STAR GAME: Spikes outfielder Wes Freeman was named to play in the 2011 New York-Penn League All-Star Game on Thursday. Freeman joins catcher Samuel Gonzalez and outfielder Carlos Mesa have each been named to the National League squad for Tuesday's contest in Lowell. Mesa will not play due to injury.
