Spikes, Tigers Rained out Sunday

August 14, 2011 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
State College Spikes News Release

STATE COLLEGE, PA - Sunday night's game between the State College Spikes and Connecticut Tigers has been called in the bottom of the second inning due to rain in the State College area. The game will not be made up, as it is the final scheduled game of the 2011 regular season between the two teams.

Tickets for Sunday night's game can redeemed for any other home game remaining on the Spikes' 2011 schedule, based on availability. Fans can redeem their tickets by visiting the Medlar Field at Lubrano Park Box Office.

Sunday's post-game fireworks show, presented by CNB Bank and WCPA 900 AM, has been postponed as well. The Spikes will make an announcement concerning an alternate date for the fireworks in the near future.

The stoppage came after a delay of approximately one hour due to rain with no score in the bottom of the second inning. Mike Jefferson had allowed two hits and a walk while striking out two in his first two innings on the mound for State College, while Junior Sosa delivered a single and Derek Trent contributed a double. Statistics from Sunday's game will not count, however, as the game had not reached five complete innings.

The Spikes will have the next two days off from games, with pitchers working out on Monday and Tuesday, before heading to Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill, NY for a 7:05 p.m. matchup on Wednesday against the Hudson Valley Renegades (Tampa Bay Rays). Wednesday's game will start a six-game road trip for the Spikes, who will play three games against the Renegades before facing the Auburn Doubledays (Washington Nationals).

While their teammates prepare for the road trip, Spikes catcher Samuel Gonzalez and outfielder Wes Freeman will be headed to Lowell, MA for the 2011 New York-Penn League All-Star Game. The two Spikes will represent State College and the Pittsburgh Pirates organization on the National League squad in the NYPL Midsummer Classic, which will take place on Tuesday at Edward LeLacheur Park with the first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m.

The Spikes return home on Tuesday, August 23 to start a six-game homestand with a 7:05 matchup against the Jamestown Jammers (Florida Marlins). Fans can put a headlock on value with the Spikes' second annual Wrestling Rumble Night, paying tribute to the greatest feats of the squared circle throughout the evening. Plus, Buck Bleacher Night gives fans the chance to lock up an Outfield Bleacher seat for just $1, thanks to the Centre Daily Times. It's also the first night of the College 3-2-1 Special, presented by BioLife Plasma Services, with $3 off any seat in the ballpark, $2 off a medium soda, and $1 hot dogs available to any college student showing the proper ID.

Tickets for Tuesday's game, as well as each of the eight home games remaining on the Spikes' 2011 home schedule, are currently on sale through the Spikes Box Office by calling (814) 272-1711 or by visiting in person.
