
Six-Run Eighth Inning Propels IronBirds to 9-3 Win

Aberdeen, MD - With the game tied at three headed into the eighth inning Sunday evening, the IronBirds sent 11 hitters to the plate and scored six runs on five hits as they beat the Williamsport Crosscutters 9-3.
Parker Bridwell started the game for Aberdeen. The Crosscutters got to him in the third. Pete Lavin, Kyrell Hudson, and Bob Stumpo hit back-to-back-to-back singles to start off the frame. Aaron Altherr lifted a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Lavin, and making it 1-0. Bridwell would strand the other two runners.
Austin Goolsby (2) tied the game up with one swing of the bat in the third. The IronBirds' catchers blasted a solo home run to left field.
The Crosscutters tied it up in the fifth. Lavin reached on a double. He advanced to third on a ground-out to second. Stumpo knocked him in with a sacrifice fly to right.
In the sixth, Aberdeen took the lead. Kyle Hoppy and Martin Serrata reached on singles. They advanced to second and third on a ground-out to short. Wynston Sawyer hit a two-run single to center, making it a 3-2 game.
Williamsport answered back with a run in the seventh. With one man out, Lavin and Hudson hit back-to-back singles. Stumpo walked, loading the bases for Altherr. He grounded into a fielder's choice. Lavin scored, tying the ball game at three.
The IronBirds would re-take the lead in the eighth. Glynn Davis led off the inning with a ground ball to shortstop. Taylor Black fielded it and threw wildly to first base. It was ruled a single and an E-6 that allowed him to get to second. Martin Serrata reached on a bunt single, putting runners at the corners. Mychal Givens hit a ground ball to second. Cody Asche threw it home, but it wasn't in time to get Davis.
Aberdeen had the lead but they weren't done. Sawyer walked to load the bases. Connor Narron hit a two-run single to left-center. Austin Knight grounded into a fielder's choice, putting runners at first and third. A batter later, Dudley Leonora hit an RBI-single. Hoppy walked, loading the bases for Davis. He hit a two-run bloop single to right field, making it 9-3.
Zach Fowler (1-0) got the win after pitching two perfect innings of relief. Gabriel Arias (1-2) took the loss.
The IronBirds will be off the next two days for the all-star break. They return to action on Wednesday August 17th at the Auburn Doubledays. Aberdeen will have right-hander Tyler Wilson (0-0, 2.00 on the mound. He'll go up against left-hander Christian Meza (1-1, 7.36). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
