-SPIKES OPEN 2011 HOME SLATE TONIGHT: The State College Spikes open up their sixth season at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park tonight against the rival Williamsport Crosscutters.The SawBuck Series between the two teams stands at 2-0 in favor of Williamsport this season. The ‘Cutters also lead the all-time series, 34-28.

-LAST GAME: Wes Freeman went yard with a fourth-inning solo homer to score the first Spikes run of the year, but Matt Payton's two-run double in the sixth gave Williamsport a 3-1 win last night at Historic Bowman Field. Ryan Hafner made a strong start for State College, striking out two and allowing just three hits over four shutout innings. The Crosscutters scored their first run thanks to three Spikes errors in the fourth inning. Freeman and Brian Sharp each threw out runners at the plate for State College.

-BENEDICT TO DEBUT FOR SPIKES: Right-hander Matt Benedict starts on the mound tonight for State College in his first appearance as a professional. Benedict was chosen by the Pirates in the 30th round of this year's draft out of Western Carolina, where he led the Catamounts in both strikeouts and innings pitched in the spring of 2011. Benedict currently sits in the top 20 on Western Carolina's all-time career strikeouts list with 174.

-MARTINEZ GETS THE BALL FOR ‘CUTTERS: The Crosscutters will go with left-hander Lino Martinez for the final game of the series. Martinez, a 19-year-old from Zulia, Venezuela, made 11 appearances (three as a starter) for the Gulf Coast League Phillies in 2010. The southpaw struck out 30 and walked 9 over 34 2/3 innings of work in his first pro season.

-ALLIE TO MAKE PRO DEBUT TOMORROW: Stetson Allie, the Pirates' second-round draft pick in 2010 and the third-best prospect in the Pittsburgh system according to Baseball America, will make his first-ever pro appearance tomorrow at home against Auburn.
