Jammers Drop Series Finale to Scrappers, 5-2
June 19, 2011 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Jamestown Jammers News Release
After getting off to hot starts in their ï¬Ârst two games, the Jamestown Jammers' bats were silent until the ninth inning as the team's comeback attempt came up short, 5-2, against Mahoning Valley at Eastwood Field Sunday.
Scrapper pitching limited the Jamestown offense to just three hits on the night, and the team failed to collect multiple hits in an inning to spoil a good start by Helpi Reyes. In his Jammer debut, Reyes tossed ï¬Âve innings, allowed ï¬Âve hits and one earned run to be the hard- luck loser.
Mahoning Valley jumped out to an early lead for the ï¬Ârst time in the series. After Kirk Wetmore sent the Jammers down in order in the top of the ï¬Ârst, Tony Wolters singled with one out in the bottom of the inning. He moved to third thanks to a balk and wild pitch by Reyes, but Reyes battled back to record a strike out for the second out to almost escape the jam. For the second night in a row, the Scrappers struck with two outs as catcher Jake Lowery belted a ground-rule double to plate the game's ï¬Ârst run.
The Jammers would threaten to tie the game in the top of the second. Rand Smith walked and Ryan McIntyre was hit by a pitch to put a runner in scorer position with one down. Smith then advanced to third on a wild pitch, but Eddie Rodriguez grounded into an inning-ending double play to keep Jamestown off the board.
While the Jammer offense continued to struggle, the Scrappers would strike for another run in the third inning on another double by Lowery to extend the lead to two.
Neither team had a runner get past second base until the bottom of the seventh inning when Mahoning Valley struck for three more runs to break the game open. A throwing error and a two-run single by Lowery extended the Scrapper lead to ï¬Âve.
The Jamestown offense ï¬Ânally came alive in the ninth inning. Ryan Goetz worked a leadoff walk, and Terrence Dayleg tripled to center to snap a 16-inning scoreless streak for the Jammers and cut the deï¬Âcit to four. Following consecutive strikeouts, Eddie Rodriguez was hit by a pitch then Scrapper reliever Enosil Tejada balked to force in a second Jamestown run.
Tejada was able to regain his composer, and he got Jose Behar to ground out to ï¬Ârst to end the game.
Dayleg led the Jamestown offense with the run scored and RBI triple, while Brent Keys and Ryan McIntyre each had a single to account for the entire Jamestown offense.
Wetmore earned the win for the Scrappers. He surrendered just two hits with one strikeout in ï¬Âve shutout innings to imrpove to 1-0 on the year. Offensively, Lowery paced the attack with three hits and four RBI, while Siliga contributed two singles.
The Jammers will now return home to take on Williamsport in a three-game series starting on Monday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and a ï¬Âreworks show will follow the home opener.
