Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Aberdeen, MD - The Aberdeen IronBirds fell to the Hudson Valley Renegades Sunday evening in 10 innings by a score of 5-4. The Renegades and IronBirds traded punches with Aberdeen holding the lead for most of the game until the late innings.
Hudson Valley got on the board first with a run in the top of the fourth off of Aberdeen starter David Baker. Kris Carter got a single, the Renegades' first hit of the ballgame. He advanced to second on a Baker balk and then came around from second to score on two wild pitches, giving the Renegades the early 1-0 lead.
Aberdeen would counter right away in the bottom of the inning. Baltimore native Joe Velleggia hit a single and then scored on Mychal Givens' RBI double. The IronBirds got another run in the bottom of the fifth. Austin Goolsby led off with a single. Cody Young bunted his way aboard and Dudley Leonora reached on a Tanner Biagini error to load the bases. Chris Clinton batted Goolsby in with a single, but Aberdeen stranded the bases loaded.
The IronBirds scored again in the bottom of the seventh. Goolsby got aboard with a single and advanced when Renegades' pitcher Robert Dickmann had a throwing error on a ball that Young hit. Goolsby scored when Dudley Leonora grounded into a double play.
Hudson Valley catcher Gerard Olivares led off the ninth with a home run that hit off of the visitor's clubhouse that tied the game at 3.
The Renegades then scored two runs in the 10th. Craige Lyerly led off with a single and later scored on Chris Winder's RBI triple. Juniel Querecuto then had an RBI groundout to plate Winder and give the Renegades a 5-3 lead.
Aberdeen got within a run in the bottom of the 10th, but that's as close as they would get. Clinton was hit by pitch and later scored on Joe Velleggia's RBI double. Goolsby then flied out to deep left center with the bases loaded to end the game.
Brandon Holloway takes the loss and falls to 0-1 on the season. He pitched one inning and gave up one hit, a run, which was earned, and struck out one. Robert Dickmann gets the win for Hudson Valley, improving to 1-0. He pitched four innings, giving up two hits and a run, while striking out one. Justin Woodall worked the 10th and gave up a run, but earns the save.
Hudson Valley improves to 2-1 and goes home to play Staten Island tomorrow night. Aberdeen falls to 1-2 and travels to Brooklyn tomorrow for a three game set. The Cyclones are expected to send Chris Hilliard to the mound and the IronBirds will give Matt Drummond his first start of the year.
