State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA - A record 5,836 fans packed Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for the State College Spikes' 2011 Home Opener and witnessed four Spikes pitchers shut out the Williamsport Crosscutters in a 3-0 win Sunday night to give the club its first win of the season.
The standing-room-only sellout crowd surpassed the Spikes' previous high mark of 5,807, set on July 30, 2010 in a game against the Crosscutters. It was also the 11th time in franchise history the Spikes welcomed a standing-room-only crowd, and the fourth straight time Williamsport has been the opponent on a night where the Medlar Field at Lubrano Park attendance record has been broken.
Once the fans reached their seats, State College (1-2) started a strong team pitching performance with a stellar start from right-hander Matt Benedict. The 30th-round draft choice from Western Carolina retired all nine batters he faced in his professional debut, striking out two in three innings of work.
Bryce Weidman (1-0) continued the effort, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out one, picking up the win in the process. Fraylin Camposfollowed and retired all six batters he faced over two innings, striking out two batters before giving way to Mitch Fienemann (1). Fienemann allowed one hit, but struck out two batters as well to earn the save.
The Spikes jumped out in front early, as Samuel Gonzalez led off the second inning with a double and scored on Brian Sharp's RBI single. Sharp then reached home himself on Jorge Bishop's sacrifice fly to stake the Spikes to a 2-0 lead.
Carlos Mesa then plated the final State College run when he drove in Bishop with a double to the Nittany Bank Nook in left-center field in the sixth inning.
Gonzalez ended the evening as the only Spike with multiple hits in a 2-for-4 performance. Derek Trent went 1-for-4 and became the lone State College player to collect a base hit in each of the team's first three games.
Williamsport (2-1) was held to only three hits total a night after allowing just two hits to the Spikes at Historic Bowman Field. Lino Martinez (0-1) took the loss, yielding all three State College runs on seven hits while collecting three strikeouts.
Fans also experienced a wide variety of fun, family entertainment before the game, as live music, skydivers and Internet sensation Bob the Bicycle Manwowed the crowd. After the Spikes made their entrance into the ballpark via limousine, former Penn State basketball star Talor Battle threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
Monday night, highly touted right-hander Stetson Allie makes his professional debut as the Auburn Doubledays come into Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for a 7:05 matchup to start a three-game set with the Spikes. Allie, the second-round draft pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2010, was rated by Baseball America prior to the season as both the third-best prospect in the Pirates' system and as having the best slider in the organization.
The Doubledays, now a Washington Nationals affiliate, will send right-hander Kelvin Lopez to the mound for his first start of 2011. Lopez, a native of Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, has spent the last two seasons with the Gulf Coast League Nationals, racking up a career record of 4-6 with a 5.34 ERA.
Monday night will go to the dogs in more ways than one at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Fans can purchase hot dogs for just $1 apiece throughout the game on Dollar Dog Monday, presented by 95.3 FM 3WZ. Plus, it's the first Bob's Bark in the Park night of the season, presented by Metzger Animal Hospital. Bring out your favorite four-legged friends to the ballpark for a night of family fun and meet Bob the Baseball Dog, who will host this canine convention.
Tickets for Monday's game, as well as every Spikes regular season home game, are currently on sale through the Spikes Box Office by calling (814) 272-1711, or by visiting in person. Fans can also buy and print single-game ticket by visiting StateCollegeSpikes.com.
Fans can catch all of the action on Monday via the Spikes Radio Network at 6:35 p.m. with the Spikes GameDay Show live from Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The Spikes' radio broadcast can also be heard worldwide through the "Listen Live" link on StateCollegeSpikes.com, provided by 95.3 FM 3WZ.
