-SPIKES MEET VALLEYCATS STARTING TONIGHT: After a day off for the Major League All-Star Game, the State College Spikes will play the Tri-City ValleyCats in the first of a three-game series tonight at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The ValleyCats are currently in last place in the Stedler Division, behind Vermont, Oneonta and Lowell. The Spikes and ValleyCats each have three wins in the all-time series, with each team also having taken two of three games in the other's home park.

-MONDAY NIGHT: The Spikes' valiant ninth-inning comeback fell short as they dropped their second in a row to the Brooklyn Cyclones, 7-6. All six Spikes runs came with two outs in an inning. Chris Simmons took advantage of a start at DH to drive in two runs. His Army teammate Cole White extended his hit streak to a team-leading 11 games with two hits, including an RBI single. David Rubinstein also contributed a multi-hit game, including a run-scoring double. No Spikes pitcher walked a batter in the game.

-OWENS MAKES THE MOUND HIS HOME: Rudy Owens gets the start for State College. Owens has not made a start away from Medlar Field at Lubrano Park this year. The left-hander is 0-3 with a 6.88 ERA, but has produced two fine outings in his last two appearances. Owens pitched 2.2 scoreless innings against Vermont on the Fourth of July, then went into the fifth inning for the first time all year in his last start against Hudson Valley. On the year, Owens has struck out 18 and walked only three.

-NOGUERA TAKES THE HILL FOR 'CATS: Antonio Noguera will be the other participant in the first matchup of left-handers the Spikes have experienced this year. Noguera has had a pattern of struggling and excelling every other start. The lefty makes his sixth start of the year, and in even-numbered starts, has gone ten innings with a 2.70 ERA. In odd-numbered starts, Noguera has pitched eight innings, going 0-3 with a 21.38 ERA. Noguera's biggest obstacle has been the first inning, in which he has a 27.00 ERA.
