-SPIKES FINISH OPENING SERIES OF SEASON TONIGHT: The State College Spikes face the Williamsport Crosscutters and will try to salvage a split in the final game of a four-game set, with the scene switching back to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The SawBuck Series rivals have met 75 times over seven years, with the 'Cutters holding a 41-34 all-time series lead. The Spikes are 19-18 all-time against Williamsport at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, and went 3-3 against the 'Cutters on the road last year.
-LAST GAME: Raul Fortunato's first-inning triple gave the State College Spikes a hopeful start, but the Williamsport Crosscutters used a seven-run fourth inning and a stifling pitching corps to get past the Spikes, 13-1, on Wednesday night at Historic Bowman Field. Fortunato's three-bagger was the lone State College hit of the game. Williamsport's Mitch Walding went 4-for-5 with a double and four RBI. State College starter Jake Burnette took the loss despite allowing only two of the Crosscutters' runs, and earning just one.
-HEREDIA HEADS TO MOUND FOR ANTCIPATED NYPL DEBUT: Right-hander Luis Heredia, rated as the fifth-best prospect in the entire Pittsburgh Pirates system by Baseball America, will take to the hill to start for State College tonight. Heredia, at 17 years old, is the youngest player ever to wear a Spikes uniform. The Mazatlan, Mexico native went 1-2 with a 4.75 ERA in 12 appearances (11 starts) for the Gulf Coast League Pirates last year, with a 23-to-19 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
-MUSSER MAKES START FOR 'CUTTERS: Right-hander Jonathan Musser is slated to start for the Crosscutters tonight. Musser was drafted in the 21st round by the Phillies in 2010, and made his professional debut last year with the Gulf Coast League Phillies. Musser took his lumps in the league, going 1-6 with a 6.44 ERA and posting a 25-to-26 strikeout-to-walk ratio as a combination starter/reliever
-PAIR OF 2012 DRAFTEES JOIN SPIKES: Two of the Pirates' 2012 draft picks have joined the Spikes roster. D.J. Crumlich, the Bucs' ninth-round pick out of UC-Irvine, and Chris Diaz, the PIrates' 11th round pick from N.C. State, will make their professional debuts tonight.
-SPIKE MARKS: Barrett Barnes leads the NYPL in times hit by pitch with 3...Joely Rodriguez leads the loop in walks with 5...The Spikes were last one-hit on August 4, 2010 at home against Staten Island...Jacob Stallings's father, Vanderbilt men's basketball head coach Kevin Stallings, was on hand for both of his son's first two pro games
