
Cutters bats cool off in shutout loss to Spikes

The Crosscutters split the opening series of the season, losing to State College 8-0 as the bats went cold at Medlar Field.
The Cutters didn't record a hit until the fourth inning and only mustered three combined hits. Brian Pointer and Yan Carlos Olmo had the lone knocks for Williamsport, who dropped to 2-2 on the year.
Pointer was a lone bright spot, finishing 2-for-4.
Starter Jonathan Musser earned the loss for the Cutters. He allowed three runs on four walks and two hits in two innings of work. Luis Gonzalez allowed four runs in four innings of relief work, while Steven Inch allowed one run in two innings.
Spikes scored first in the second inning. After Cutters' Musser walked the bases full, Rodarrick Jones hit a sac fly to center to score Samuel Gonzalez. On the ensuing at-bat Jodaneli Carvajal gave State College a 3-0 lead on a two-run triple to the wall in right-center field.State College upped to lead in the third inning. Yhonathan Barrios hit a chop to Cutters' shortstop Roman Quinn, whose throw went into right field, allowing Gonzalez to score. Spikes increased the lead to 5-0 when Walker Gourley singled home Barrios in the next at-bat.
The Spikes struck again in the seventh. Jodaneli Carvajal led off with a triple over the head of center fielder Yan Carlos Olmo. Carvajal then scored on the RBI single by Barrett Barnes. D.J. Crumlich then brought home Barnes on a groundball single up the middle. It was Crumlich's first career hit and it gave the Spikes a 7-0 lead.
State College scored one last time in the eight on an RBI single by Barnes. He finished the day 3-for-5 with two RBI. Carvajal was the offensive star for State College, going 3-for-3 with a pair of triples and driving in two runs.
Williamsport starts a series with the Auburn Doubledays, affiliates of the Washington Nationals, on Friday in a 7:05pm matchup at Bowman Field.
