Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BURLINGTON, VT --- 2008 Lake Monsters catcher Derek Norris was promoted from Triple-A Sacramento to the Oakland Athletics today, making him the 66th former Vermont player to reach the Major Leagues all-time and the 16th different former Lake Monster in the Majors this season.

Norris was named the 2008 Tom Racine MVP by Lake Monster fans after hitting .278 (63-for-227) with 42 runs, 12 doubles, 10 homers and 38 RBI in 70 games for Vermont. Norris holds the Lake Monsters single-season record with 63 walks, while his 10 home runs are tied for third most in a season by a Vermont player.

After Vermont, Norris spent the next three years moving up the Washington Nationals farm system with stops at Single-A Hagerstown in 2009 (.286, 23 HR, 84 RBI), High Single-A Potomac in 2010 (.235, 12 HR, 49 RBI) and Double-A Harrisburg in 2011 (.210, 20 HR, 46 RBI). In December, Norris was traded along with former Lake Monsters Tommy Milone, Brad Peacock and AJ Cole by the Nationals to the Oakland Athletics for pitcher Gio Gonzalez.

In his first season in the Athletics organization, Norris was hitting .273 (57-for-209) with 37 runs, 14 doubles, 8 homers and 36 RBI in 55 games for Triple-A Sacramento.

A fourth-round selection of the Nationals in the 2007 draft, Norris is the fifth member of the 2008 Lake Monsters to reach the Major Leagues, joining Milone, Peacock, Danny Espinosa and Tyler Moore. That ties the 1994 Vermont Expos as the fourth-most players from one team to make the Majors (1995, 1996 and 1997 each had seven players).
