-SPIKES LOOK FOR BACk-TO-BACK ROAD WINS: The State College Spikes continue a four-game road trip, their first extended excursion away from Medlar Field at Lubrano Park in 2014, with a matchup against the Jamestown Jammers tonight in the second game of a two-game mini-series. The two clubs finished 1-2 in the New York-Penn League's Pinckney Division last year, with the Spikes earning the division crown and the Jammers a Wild Card berth into the playoffs. State College then defeated Jamestown, 2 games to 1, in the NYPL Semifinal Series before falling in the NYPL Championship Series. The Spikes went 8-2 against the Jammers last year, including a 4-1 mark in games played at Russell Diethrick Park. All-time, State College is 40-41 against Jamestown.
-LAST NIGHT: Three State College Spikes home runs, including a broken-bat shot from Rowan Wick for his New York-Penn League-leading sixth of the year, powered the Spikes into the tenth inning, where they defeated the Jamestown Jammers, 5-3, on Friday night at Russell Diethrick Park. Wick upped his RBI total to 10 on the year, second behind Jamestown's Tanner Gushue, with his seventh-inning solo blast. The ball traveled approximately 370 feet over the right field wall despite Wick's bat splitting in two. Alex De Leon then tied the game for the Spikes in the ninth inning with his first home run of the season, crushing a ball to left-center field to knot the contest, 3-3. Danny Diekroeger hit his first pro homer in the first inning. Kyle Grana went three innings to get the relief win for State College, and Jeff Rauh tossed a perfect 10th for the save.
-SCHUMACHER MAKES PRO DEBUT TONIGHT: Right-hander Cody Schumacher, the 26th-round draft choice of the Cardinals in 2014, gets the mound call tonight for State College in his professional debut. Schumacher rebounded from an injury-shortened 2013 campaign to go 6-2 with a 2.45 ERA as Missouri State's Friday starter this past spring, leading the Bears in wins. The Topeka, KS native held opponents to a .210 batting average, the fourth-lowest in the Missouri Valley Conference. Schumacher also received the Dave Dickensheet Award as MSU's most outstanding pitcher in 2014, and his college career winning percentage of .789 puts him seventh in school history.
-JAMMERS CALL ON McRAE TO MAKE START: Right-hander Alex McRae makes the start for the Jammers tonight. McRae, the Pirates' 10th-round choice in the 2014 MLB Draft, posted career highs in wins and strikeouts this past spring for Jacksonville University. The righty was a two-time Atlantic Sun Conference Pitcher of the Week in 2014, and was rated by Baseball America as the fourth-best draft prospect in the conference prior to the season. In his first profesisonal start, McRae went 2 1/3 scoreless innings against Mahoning Valley on Monday.
-WICK-ED WITH THE BAT : Rowan Wick has been on a historic tear through the beginning of the Spikes' season, becoming the only player in franchise history with five homers through the season's first five games. His six homers are now the most for any Spike in the month of June, besting 2006 Spike Mark Hamilton, who had five. Wick's ten RBI are second-most in the New York-Penn League, and his .393 average tops the loop.
-CH-CH-CHANGES : Five players - RHP Steven Farinaro, RHP Dailyn Martinez, LHP Ian McKinney, INF Rafael Medina and INF Chris Rivera - were transferred down to Rookie-level Johnson City on Tuesday after starting the year with the Spikes. OF Brian Vigo-Suarez was also placed on the 7-day DL. To replace them, the Cardinals activated a total of five 2014 draft picks: INF Danny Diekroeger, LHP Austin Gomber, RHP Danny Poncedeleon, OF Chase Raffield and RHP Cody Schumacher. Gomber is slated to start tomorrow's game for the Spikes in what will be his professional debut.
-SPIKE MARKS: Former Spikes infielder Jared Lakind made a one-inning relief appearance for Jamestown last night, collecting two strikeouts...Lakind transitioned to a pitching role last year with the Jammers, going 2-2 with a 4.56 ERA in 17 appearances..Last night's game was the first Spikes game decided by less than three runs this year...Fernando Baez has allowed only one baserunner in his first 6 2/3 innings of relief this year for the Spikes, a walk
