Jamestown Jammers News Release
JAMESTOWN, NY -Things were looking great for the Jamestown Jammers at Diethrick Park Saturday night. Heading into the top of the sixth inning, the Jammers held a 2-0 lead against the State College Spikes. Unfortunately, that's when the wheels fell off for Jamestown. State College would explode for four runs in the inning, and would add two more runs in the top of the ninth to make the final score 6-2 in favor of the Spikes.
Third basemen Chase Simpson got things started right for the Jammers with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning. Then in the bottom of the third, center fielder Carl Anderson tripled and would later score on a passed ball to stake the Jammers to their 2-0 lead.
Starting pitcher Alex McRae threw extremely well for the Jammers, despite giving up a lead-off double in the first inning to State College center fielder Jhohan Acevedo. McRae would bare down and escape the inning without giving up any damage, and it was basically smooth sailing for him from there. In total, McRae would throw four innings, give up only one hit (the lead-off double in the first), and strike out two Spikes.
Jerry Mulderig would relieve McRae in the top of the fifth. Mulderig would throw a scoreless fifth inning, before struggling in the sixth during State College's four run outburst. For the Spikes in the inning, there were four runs on four hits, including a lead-off home run by shortstop Andrew Sohn, a triple by Acevedo, and a triple by second basemen Danny Diekroeger.
The score would remain 4-2 until the top of the ninth inning when the Spikes got to Jammer reliever Luis Urena. Third basemen Ronnierd Garcia started the inning with a lead-off single. Then catcher Brad O'Keefe doubled to center field to put runners on second and third. A wild pitch by Urena allowed Garcia to score, and then an RBI single by right fielder Collin Radack allowed O'Keefe to score to conclude the scoring for State College.
The Jammers couldn't manage to mount an offensive rally in the bottom half of the ninth. Anderson, Simpson, and right fielder Michael Suchy picked up the hits for Jamestown.
Jamestown opens up a two game series with the Williamsport Crosscutters tomorrow afternoon at Diethrick Park. It's Cummins Community Care Night at the ballpark. Gates will open at 3 for the 4:05pm start time. For the Jammers, Right-handed pitcher Austin Coley will take the mound. He will be opposed by right-handed pitcher Mitch Gueller of the Crosscutters.
