Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
One Run Game Goes Brooklyn's Way
The Aberdeen IronBirds fell 7-6 to the Brooklyn Cyclones in their home opener. IronBirds' starter RHP Stephen Tarpley had a rough night, lasting only 2.1 innings while giving up six hits and four earned runs, giving him an ERA of 9.95. RHP Alex Santana came in at the top of the third with two outs remaining, and he went on to retire 14 batters in a row while striking out seven, a season high for Santana. The IronBirds had good run support throughout most of the game and thanks to solid performances from SS Justin Viele and DH Riley Palmer. Santana was pulled at the top of the eighth, leaving Derrick Bleeker his 6-4 lead. Bleeker gave up two runs in the inning to make it 6-6. After allowing a double, which turned into a triple thanks to a throwing error from RF Oswill Lartiguez, Bleeker was pulled in favor of RHP Brady Adamek, who gave up the game-winning sacrifice fly to the first batter he faced.
Santana on Fire
RHP Alex Santana turned in a very strong performance last night. Despite inheriting one out and loaded bases at the top of the third, Santana didn't allow anybody to score that inning, nor for the rest of the game. His retiring of 14 straight batters was a season-high for the IronBirds' pitching staff. He finished the night pitching 4.2 innings, while allowing zero hits, runs and walks as well as recording seven strikeouts.
A. Murphy's Streak Continues
One of the biggest story lines for the IronBirds this season has been the exceptional play by hometown kid C Alex Murphy. Heading into the game, Murphy was a on three game hitting streak, batting .407 and going 8-14 in the series vs. Staten Island. In his first at bat last night in the bottom of the first, with the IronBirds down 2-0, Murphy hit a solo home run over the left field wall, bringing his hitting streak to four games; however, after the home run Murphy went hitless and finished the night 1-5, with one run, one hit and one strike out.
Bundy on the Mound
RHP Dylan Bundy has garnered the most attention while on a minor league rehab assignment. He was drafted No. 4 overall by the Orioles in the 2011 draft. He pitched for the IronBirds against Hudson Valley on 6/15. Bundy threw 65 pitches in 5.0 innings, gave up five hits and one earned run, and had an ERA of 1.80.
