-SPIKES CONCLUDE SERIES VS. SPINNERS: The State College Spikes look to establish some fresh momentum after getting swept in a doubleheader last night as the head back to LeLacheur Park tonight to complete their three-game series with the Lowell Spinners. The Spikes are still 7-3 over their last ten games, and just last night saw a five-game win streak, the second such string this year, end. State College has a 9-9 mark all time against Lowell, including a sweep at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park last year.
-LAST GAME: The Spikes were frustrated at the plate in both games of a doubleheader last night at LeLacheur Park. State College dropped a 1-0 decision to the Lowell Spinners in game one and lost 2-0 in game two. The Spikes produced just five hits total in the two games. Game one starter Adrian Sampson was excellent for the Spikes, hurling five shutout innings and recording 13 consecutive outs at one point. Sampson gave up just one walk and one hit while striking out four.
-HEREDIA TO HANDLE MOUND DUTIES FOR SPIKES: Right-hander Luis Heredia heads to the hill for State College this evening. The 17-year-old phenom from Mazatlan, Mexico holds the second-best ERA in the Pittsburgh Pirates system, and has gone five innings in each of his last five starts. Last time out, Heredia earned his second win of the season in an afternoon start against Batavia. The righty fanned two batters and allowed one run on two hits over five innings for the W.
-SPINNERS TAP LIGHT FOR START TONIGHT: Right-hander Pat Light is slated to start for the Spinners tonight. Light was selected by the Red Sox in the supplemental first round of 2012 MLB Draft out of Monmouth, becoming the highest-drafted player in Northeast Conference history. The Colts Neck, NJ native is also fifth on the Hawks' all-time career strikeouts list with 196. Light has not gone more than two innings in any of his first four professional starts.
-SPIKES SUCCESS UNPARALLELED IN TEAM HISTORY: With Friday's wins, the Spikes went to seven games above .500, the highest-water mark since the Spikes first started playing in State College in 2006. State College also took its fourth three-game series sweep this year over Connecticut, the most for any single season in franchise history.
-SPIKE MARKS: Gaffney's 2 HBP on Friday set a Spikes single-season record, which has since risen to 12 (in just 21 games)...The previous record of 9 was co-held by Brian Friday (2007) and Justin Byler (2009)...Gaffney also tied the club's single-game record of 4 runs held by Keanon Simon (8/12/07), Chad Rice (7/4/08) and Kyle Morgan (8/24/08)
