Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

WAPPINGERS FALLS: The Hudson Valley Renegades completed a sweep of the visiting Williamsport Crosscutters with a 7-4 victory Monday night in front of 4,043 fans at Dutchess Stadium. The Renegades (27-15) scored all of their runs in the first three innings against the cellar-dwelling Crosscutters (13-29) to run away with the win, capping a terrific end to the month. After beginning July with a 1-6 skid, Hudson Valley ripped off a 17-4 streak to take control of the McNamara Division of the New York-Penn League and finish the month at 12 games over .500.

Williamsport drew first blood in the top of the first inning. With one out, Mitch Walding reached on an error by shortstop Ryan Dunn, and moved to second on a single by Cameron Perkins off Renegades starter Matt Spann (2-3). With two outs, Larry Greene dropped a single to left field that scored Walding from second base and gave the Crosscutters a 1-0 lead after the top of the first.

The Renegades struck back in a big way in the bottom of the inning. Center fielder Joey Rickard slammed a leadoff double to right off 'Cutters starter Josh Warner (2-4). Rickard moved to third on a fly- out to right field by Reginatto. Designated hitter Richie Shaffer struck out swinging, but the wild pitch allowed Rickard to score and Shaffer to reach first safely. First baseman Luke Maile dropped a single into right field that advanced Shaffer to third with one out. Dunn grounded sharply to third base, but Walding's throw led second baseman Gustavo Gonzalez too far off the bag; Maile reached second, Dunn made it safely to first, and Shaffer came home to score.

The 'Gades kept their train rolling with a single from right fielder Joel Caminero that loaded the bases for left fielder Marty Gantt, who lofted a sacrifice fly to right that advanced all the runners and scored Maile from third. Catcher Geoff Rowan lashed a sharp ground ball down the third base line that turned into a double, scoring both Caminero and Dunn and running the score to 5-1 in favor of the Renegades.

Williamsport drew closer in the top of the second. With one out, Logan Moore reached on an error by Maile at first. Gustavo Gonzalez slashed a deep fly over Gantt's head in left field that scored Moore, and came home on a ground out to second base to close the gap to 5-3.

The Renegades added a run in the bottom of the second frame. Rickard led off with another double, this time to left field, and came around to score with two outs on a Maile single to left. The tally made it a 6-3 lead for the 'Gades.

Hudson Valley added one more score in the third inning, as Caminero led off the frame with a double to left. With one out, Caminero swiped third base, and came home on an RBI single to right from Rowan. The Renegades exited the third with a 7-3 lead.

Williamsport drew a little closer in the top of the eighth inning. With one out, Walding tripled to left, and came home on a ground out from Perkins to cut Hudson Valley's lead to 7-4. That, however, would be as close as the 'Cutters came, and the Renegades came away with the win.

Spann pitched six solid innings to come away with the win, allowing three runs (all unearned) on seven hits; he struck out two and walked none. Reinaldo Lopez pitched a scoreless inning of relief and gave up a hit. Dylan Floro tossed two innings of relief, giving up a run on one hit and fanning two.

Warner was shelled for seven runs (four earned) on eight hits over four innings, striking out two. Matt Sisto threw two perfect innings of relief, whiffing two. Jeb Stefan allowed just one hit in his inning of work, and Geoff Broussard tossed a perfect eighth with two strikeouts.

The Renegades have an off day Tuesday before hitting the road against the State College Spikes on Wednesday. Southpaw Sean Bierman will go for the Renegades against Spikes righthander Clay Holmes. That game starts at 7:05 p.m., with Ben Gellman's pregame show starting at 6:50 p.m. on 1450 and 1370 AM WKIP, as well as online at HVRenegades.com.
