Tigers and Jammers Split Doubleheader

NORWICH, CT- Facing a 12-0 deficit, the Connecticut Tigers (17-24) resumed their suspended matchup from Sunday with the Jamestown Jammers (19-22) in the top of the fourth inning on Monday evening and lost 12-2 in front of a crowd of 1,117 at Dodd Stadium. In the nightcap of the doubleheader, the Tigers beat the Jammers 3-1. The series was abbreviated from three games to two games because of Saturday's rain out and Sunday's suspended game.

The Jammers offense banged out 16 hits in game one, while the Tigers had just two. The complete opposite held true in game two, with the Tigers offense winning on three runs and just five hits.

In game one Connecticut managed to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning. RF Patrick Smith (0-2) walked and advanced to second base on a SS Luis Cortez (0-3) groundout. Smith went on to score on an errant throw by Jamestown 3B Matt Juengel on a ground ball hit by CF Jake Stewart (0-3). 3B Edgar Corcino (1-2), who singled to left centerfield, drove in Stewart for a 12-2 score.

Jamestown came out of the gates swinging in the first inning in game two. CF Michael Main (1-4) reached first base on an infield single and then stole second base. Main advanced to third base on a groundout by 3B Pedro Mendoza (0-3), and scored on a single by RF Jesus Solorzano (2-3) to take a 1-0 lead.

The Tigers responded with two runs of their own in the first inning. CF Jake Stewart (1-3) led off with a single to center field and SS Jared Reaves (0-1) followed by reaching first base on a catcher's interference. LF Danry Vasquez (1-2) moved Stewart to third base and Reaves to second via a sacrifice bunt.

Stewart and Reaves both scored when 1B Juaner Aguasvivas (1-2) doubled to right centerfield, giving Connecticut a 2-1 lead.

Connecticut tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning. Reaves led off and was hit by a RHP Sean Donatello fastball. He advanced to third base on a single to rightfield by Vasquez. A Donatello wild pitch plated Reaves to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead.

Donatello, an East Lyme graduate and former RHP at UConn.-Avery Point, pitched one inning at Dodd.

LHP Joe Rogers (0-1, 4.76) earned his second save of the season, closing out the last two innings and recording five of his six outs via strikeout.

The Tigers have an off-day on Tuesday and head to Brooklyn, NY to face the Brooklyn Cyclones, the NYPL affiliate of the New York Mets on Wednesday night.

Brooklyn will send RHP Gabriel Ynoa (2-1, 2.79) to the mound against RHP Charlie Gillies (0-2, 3.67) for Connecticut. Pre-game radio coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on AM 1310 WICH and online at www.cttigers.com.
