-SPIKES TAKE ON LAKE MONSTERS IN MIDDLE GAME: The State College Spikes look to begin a new winning streak tonight at to Centennial Field tonight as they face the Vermont Lake Monsters in the second game of a three-game series. The Lake Monsters are in their first year as an Oakland Athletics affiliate. State College is 7-7 against Vermont all-time, with a 1-4 record at Centennial Field.
-LAST GAME: The State College Spikes bookended the game with positives, getting the first two runs of the game from Wes Freeman and a three-run double in the ninth from Walker Gourley, but the Vermont Lake Monsters scored seven runs in the fourth inning to pace a 10-6 victory over the Spikes on Tuesday night at Centennial Field. Freeman, in the leadoff spot for the fourth game in a row, singled in the first inning and scored on a wild pitch, then came home on Alex Dickerson's RBI double in the third inning. Vermont came back with two runs in third inning and seven in the fourth inning to take control of the game.
-HAFNER LOOKS FOR FIRST PRO WIN: Right-hander Ryan Hafner gets his eighth start of the year and ninth overall appearance of the season for the Spikes tonight. Hafner was limited to just two innings of work against Tri-City last time out due to a rain delay in the third inning, and took the loss after allowing the game's first run. The Lee's Summit, MO native was chosen in the 17th round of the 2010 MLB Draft by the Pirates.
-VERMONT SENDS MENNA TO MOUND: Vermont will go with right-hander J.C. Menna on the hill tonight. Menna was selected by the Athletics in the 14th round of the 2010 draft out of Brookdale (NJ) Community College. The righty is currently tied for second in the New York-Penn League in walks with 24, including five bases on balls in each of his last two starts. Menna has dropped three straight decisions after wins in his first two starts of 2011.
