Brooklyn Cyclones News Release
Brooklyn, NY - The Brooklyn Cyclones (25-21) won a thriller on Wednesday afternoon defeating the Williamsport Crosscutters (25-21) by a score of 3-2 in walk off fashion. Orlando Tovar (3-1) pitched 4.0 strong innings of relief to collect the victory. Javier Rodriguez plated the winning run in the bottom of the ninth with a sacrifice fly.
After a scoreless first inning, the Cyclones drew first blood in their second turn at bat. Brian Harrison started the rally with a single up the middle and came around to score when Travis Taijeron belted a triple to right-centerfield to make it 1-0. Taijeron, who has been on a tear of late, leads the NYPL in slugging and 21 of his 40 hits have gone for extra bases. Later in the frame, Nelfi Zapata connected on a booming single off of the left field wall to score Travis and give the Cyclones a 2-0 edge.
After mowing down the ¬ËCutters through the first three innings, Marco Camarena ran into trouble in the top of the fourth when Willaimsport mounted a two-out rally. Brock Stassi started the threat with a double, and came around to score on a line drive single from Harold Martinez to slice the Brooklyn advantage to 2-1.
Looking to tack onto their lead in the fifth, the Cyclones loaded the bases with two outs, but Richard Lucas grounded out to end the threat as Brooklyn failed to expand on their 2-1 edge. That would prove to be important because in the top of the sixth, with Orlando Tovar taking over for Camarena, Aaron Altherr led off the frame with a solo shot, that just scrapped over the left field wall, to draw Williamsport even at 2-2.
It looked as though the Cyclones would break the tie in the bottom of the seventh after Zapata walked and Chase Greene singled to start the frame before a fielder's choice put runners on the corners with only one out. But once again the Cyclones failed to get the big hit, as Ismael Tijerine grounded into a double play to end the threat. An inning later, the Cyclones once again had runners on the corners, this time with two outs, but Cole Frenzel grounded out to the pitcher to end the inning with the score still knotted at two.
In the ninth, after Tovar pitched his fourth inning of relief, the Cyclones were finally able to break through. Chase Greene reached on a fielder's choice before Danny Muno singled and Ismael Tijerina walked to load the bases. Javier Rodriguez took advantage of the scoring chance and send the 7,949 fans in attendance home happy as his sacrifice fly to left field scored Greene and gave Brooklyn a 3-2 win.
The Cyclones will take on the Crosscutters in the rubber match of the three-game set tomorrow, Thursday, August 4, at 7 p.m. The SNY crew will be at MCU Park and the game will be televised.
