Auburn Doubledays News Release

Auburn, NY - Auburn used four home runs, two by Jeremy Mayo, to power themselves to a 13-3 crushing of the Connecticut Tigers at Falcon Park on Tuesday night.

The thirteen runs by the Doubledays marked the third time this year they've posted thirteen runs in a game, most recently one day ago. While the Doubledays got most of their runs in the latter innings on Monday afternoon, they got started much earlier on Tuesday night.

Using four singles in the bottom of the first, the Doubledays scored three runs and took the early lead against Connecticut. Jeremy Mayo hit a solo home run in the second, his first of two long-balls on the day, putting Auburn ahead 4-0. Later in the inning, Bryce Ortega singled and scored on a base-hit by Matt Skole, giving Auburn the early five-run lead.

Connecticut got a run back in the fourth when Tyler Collins led off with a solo homerun, but that was the only blemish on Auburn starter Taylor Hill's night. In his longest outing of the season, Hill worked four innings giving up just four hits and one run, striking out three.

In the bottom of the fourth, Jeremy Mayo launched his second home run of the game. The ball bounced on the top of the wall down the left-field line and hopped over the fence for the fourth home run of the season for Mayo. The home run gave the Doubledays a 5-1 lead, but Auburn's offense was far from finished on the night.

Leading 6-1 in the bottom of the fifth, the Doubledays added more. After doubling to start the inning, Justin Miller came around to score on Angelberth Montilla's fourth home run of the season. A pitching change brought Nick Avila into the game for the Tigers, but he couldn't stop the bleeding. After retiring Carlos Alvarez, Avila hit Billy Burns with a pitch and then surrendered back-to-back doubles to Jeremy Mayo and Caleb Ramsey, increasing the Doubledays lead to 10-1.

Against reliever Chad Jenkins, the Connecticut Tigers scored two runs in the sixth on a two-RBI double by Jeff Holm into the right-field corner. Unfortunately for the Tigers, those would be the last runs they'd score on the evening. Auburn, on the other hand, wasn't done.

The Doubledays added another run in the seventh on an RBI single by Jeremy May (his fourth hit of the day) and two in the eighth on Matt Skole's fourth home run of the season. When all was said and done, Auburn had pounded out thirteen runs on sixteen hits.

Jeremy Mayo led the way offensively for the Doubledays, going 4 for 4 with two home runs and four RBIs. Bryce Ortega was 3 for 4 at the plate, and Caleb Ramsey, Matt Skole, and Justin Miller all posted multi-hit efforts.

On the mound, the Doubledays scattered nine hits, giving up just three runs. After Taylor Hill's great start, Chad Jenkins came in and gave up two runs on five hits in four innings, striking out six. Manuel Rivera pitched a perfect ninth for Auburn.

The Doubledays will try to win their fifth straight game tomorrow night when they meet the Connecticut Tigers for game two of the series in a 7:05pm first pitch at Falcon Park. Tuesday night is "Bark in the Park" night and fans are invited to bring "man's best friend" with them to the game. For tickets, please visit www.auburndoubledays.com.
