Lincoln Stars News Release
LINCOLN, Neb. - The Lincoln Stars (0-3) struggled for offense and were blanked 4-0 by the Tri-City Storm (3-0) on Friday night at the Ice Box.
Cole McWard broke the ice at the 4:05 mark of the first period, giving the visitors an early 1-0 lead. Victor Czerneckianair doubled Tri-City's lead, taking advantage of a power play at 10:27.
The Stars appeared to have cut the Storm's lead in half with a goal from Stan Cooley less than a minute later, but it was disallowed due to goaltender interference. Moments before Cooley shoveled the puck home, Winter Wallace drove down left wing and collided with Storm goaltender Todd Scott. Scott was outside his crease when contact was initiated, but the officials waved off the goal immediately.
Extracurriculars followed, resulting in minor penalties for seven players, sending Tri-City to the power play at the end of it all. Fourteen seconds into the ensuing man-advantage, Czerneckianair deflected McWard's shot through the legs of Stars goaltender Zak Brice to make it 3-0 at 11:45.
After one period, the Stars remained in the three-goal hole and were outshot 12-10.
Lincoln had a number of chances in the middle period, including a pair of crossbars struck by Jack Horbach and Dominic James, but failed to solve Scott. Despite putting 11 shots on goal in the second period, Tri-City was unable to score, as well.
In the third period, the storylines continued. Gleb Veremyev failed to score on a penalty shot in the third period while Luke Mittelstadt was assessed a boarding major and a game misconduct. Tony Follmer, Carter Schade and Jake Beaune also hit the showers early.
Nick Donato added a late power-play goal to put the finishing touches on Tri-City's third win of the preseason.
At the end of regulation, both teams had registered 103 penalty minutes, including 64 for Lincoln. Scott pitched a 24-save shutout while Brice turned aside 29 shots.
The Stars were 0-for-3 on the power-play and 5-for-8 on the penalty. Friday's game marked the third consecutive game Lincoln failed to score a goal at even strength this preseason.
