Stars Rally Late and Earn a Point in 4-3 Shootout Loss

ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Texas Stars scored three times in the third to force overtime, but Pheonix Copley stopped all three shooters he faced in the shootout to lead the Chicago Wolves to a 4-3 win on Thursday in front of 14,517 at Allstate Arena.

The Stars (14-10-2-2) scored three goals in the final 8:32 of regulation to earn a point out of the loss, including two on the power play. Jack Campbell suffered the shootout loss in relief of starter John Muse despite stopping all 28 shots he faced in the game.

Texas continues its three-in-three weekend on Friday when they visit the Grand Rapids Griffins at 6 p.m. CST.

The Wolves (12-10-1-2) appeared to take a stranglehold on the game with three goals in the first 14 minutes of play. Jordan Caron finished off a counterattack rush with a rebound goal at 2:21. Chicago made it a two-goal lead after Eriah Hayes' wrist shot from the slot at 8:39 on the power play, and Zach O'Brien finished off a two-man breakaway with Yannick Veilleux at 13:53 to make it a 3-0 Wolves lead.

At that point, Derek Laxdal pulled Texas starter John Muse and inserted Campbell.

Texas adjusted and started to come alive in period two with a 12-8 advantage in shots despite no goals.

As Copley continued to blank the Stars through the first half of period three, Texas used the power play to spark a late rally. Brett Ritchie lifted a backhand shot past the Chicago netminder from the slot at 11:28 for his fifth of the season. Just over two minutes later, Greg Rallo one-timed a touch-pass from Travis Morin in the corner for his 10th overall and sixth power play goal of the season to make it 3-2. Justin Dowling's individual effort behind the net forced a Chicago turnover and set up Mattias Backman for his first goal in a Texas Stars uniform at 17:34.

After a scoreless overtime frame, Copley stopped Brendan Ranford, Dowling and Matej Stransky while Jordan Schmaltz beat Campbell in round one to lift the Wolves to their first win over the Stars in their last 10 meetings.

Texas finished 2-for-5 on the power play. The Wolves went 1-for-5.
