Stars Pull off Gutsy Overtime Win over Sioux City

December 7, 2018 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Lincoln Stars News Release

Lincoln, NE - Friday night brought the Stars and Musketeers together for just the second time this season. A fast-moving first saw both teams move the puck well up and down the ice in an evenly played stanza. Neither side could solve starters Tyler Johnson nor Ben Kraws through the first 19:36 of play, despite a combined 21 shots on goal. Lincoln finally broke through with 24 seconds left in the frame. Grant Johnson sent a puck to the left point for Declan Carlile. The rookie defenseman uncorked a shot that Egor Postnov tipped home for his first Stars goal.

With the Stars leading 1-0 to start the second, both teams continued where they left off, playing at a fast tempo through the first few minutes of the period. Both Kraws and Johnson proved tough to solve again, as neither side could find the twine in the middle frame. The Stars began to dictate tempo as the second intermission approached, but couldn't finish on a few of scrambles in front.

Into the third, the dogfight continued. In the opening minutes of the period, the Musketeers finally cracked the scoreboard when Marcus Kallionkieli ripped a shot through off the rush for his 13th goal of the year. The Stars bent but did not break. Besieged by penalty minutes, including a five-minute major, Lincoln did not yield a single goal, fighting to the end of regulation in a 1-1 tie.

In overtime a too-many-men penalty proved costly to Sioux City. Though they nullified Lincoln's power play, it would prove to be a victory in a single battle, but not the war. After missing the last three games with an injury, Josiah Slavin announced his return to play by scoring off a rebound to the right of Ben Kraws, set up by Justin Lee and Jordan Power. The captain's seventh goal of the season sent the Stars home with two points and a two-game winning streak heading into tomorrow's showdown with the Des Moines Buccaneers. Tyler Johnson was stellar again stopping 31 of 32 on his way to his third win of the season.

The Stars and Buccaneers will drop the puck on Teddy Bear Toss Night at the Ice Box at 7:05 pm CST tomorrow night. Bring a bear and toss it onto the ice after the Stars score their first goal. All bears will be donated to Community Action, a local nonprofit dedicated to assisting the low income population of Saunders and Lancaster counties.
