Maccelli's Late Tally Gives Dubuque 3-2 Win over Muskegon

Dubuque topped the best team in the USHL, the Muskegon Lumberjacks, in a back and forth thriller on Friday night. Dubuque's 3-2 win was their third victory in the past four games and quite possibly the biggest victory of the season for the Fighting Saints. Matias Maccelli scored the game-winning goal with 1:11 to play as Dubuque avenged a 5-4 loss last Sunday.

-The two games these two teams have played this season have been physical and rough from the get go. Both teams threw the body around and took a few penalties doing so. There were after the whistle battles and battles along the boards all night as well.

-Maccelli continued his point streak for Dubuque and extended it to a season-high 10 games. He assisted on Logan Pietila's second period power play goal and scored the game winner as mentioned above. Maccelli now has 25 points this season with 11 goals and 14 assists.

-Bram Scheerer quietly put together another great game, at least on the scoresheet. Scheerer was a noticeable force all night for Dubuque and threw his body around well. He was solid in the faceoff dots and picked up two secondary assists for the Fighting Saints.

-Matthew Thiessen seems to be back at the top of his game. The Dubuque netminder has allowed five goals in his last eight periods. He made 26 stops tonight after making 19 in relief of Aaron Randazzo last Sunday. Thiessen looked calm in net and backstopped a fantastic Dubuque effort.

-Muskegon came out of the gates flying, totaling 11 shots to Dubuque's one in the first 10 minutes. Dubuque evened the total to end the first period, but Muskegon was up 1-0 after one and dominated the first 10 minutes.

-The Lumberjacks came flying towards the end of the game as well. They were able to tie the game with under 2:30 to play after a flurry of activity in front of Thiessen. Muskegon was knocking at the door for a long time and equalized late.

-It looked like the game would be going to overtime, but Matias Maccelli had other ideas. Maccelli received a two-line pass from Pietila and split the circles. He went forehand, backhand, back to the forehand and over the glove of Bussi for the game winner.

-Brandon Bussi, one of the elite goalies in the league was as advertised. He turned away 34 shots and made a few highlight reel saves to keep the game close. No matter the result in this one, the goaltender was a tough luck loser.

-Dubuque will take on Muskegon tomorrow night as well, same time and place. The Lumberjacks have not lost back to back games all season long. Dubuque is looking to win four of their last five.
