Stars Pick up a Point, But Lose in Shootout to Waterloo

WATERLOO, IOWA - The Lincoln Stars (10-8-3) took home a point from the Waterloo Blackhawks (16-4-1) but fell short in the shootout 3-2 at Young Arena on Friday night.
Lincoln's start couldn't have been better against the best team in the Western Conference, scoring the first two goals of the game. Brad Morrissey extended his point streak to five games with the ice-breaker 8:34 into the first period. Brock Bremer received the primary assist on the goal as Morrissey beat Black Hawks goaltender Gabriel Carriere along the far side from the right circle.
Travis Treloar added to Lincoln's lead with a beautiful individual effort, streaking down the left wing, saucing the puck to himself past a defender and blistering a shot past the glove of Carriere 13:42 into the first.
Luke Bast cut the Stars lead in half with a late power-play marker with under 30 seconds left in the opening frame, but the visitors maintained a lead after 20 minutes.
The second period was filled with chances at both ends, but neither team could score. Lincoln had two power-play opportunities, including a five-minute major, but they were unable to get a third goal past Carriere, despite firing 14 shots in the middle period. Heading into the third period with a lead, the Stars continued to withstand the push from the Black Hawks while continuing to pressure them at the other end of the rink.
But, with under ten minutes left in regulation, Wyatt Schingoethe tied the game with a shot from the right circle. Lincoln would kill off a crucial 4-on-3 power play late in the game, sending the contest to overtime.
The extra period solved nothing, pitting the Stars and the Black Hawks against each other in a shootout. Treloar led off, missing the net with a between-the-legs move. Matthew Barbolini misfired on his chance and Morrissey also fired wide. Kyle Haskins scored the lone goal in the shootout in the bottom of the third, going underneath the crossbar after a series of dekes, giving Waterloo the extra point. Lincoln outshot Waterloo 36-30 as Stars goaltender Jake Mucitelli made 28 saves in regulation and overtime.
Lincoln's power play continued to struggle, coming up empty on four opportunities. Tonight marked USHL and Lincoln Stars debuts for defenseman Anthony Mollica and forward Nick Nardecchia.
