Stars Stop Hawks on Saturday

December 7, 2019 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

A string of four consecutive Lincoln Stars goals was more than the Waterloo Black Hawks could overcome Saturday night during a 5-3 loss at Young Arena.

The visitors had a 2-1 lead when the third period began, and the Hawks caught a break when an early Lincoln score was disallowed due to a quick whistle. Waterloo's luck wouldn't hold; on a Lincoln power play minutes later, Brad Morrissey knocked in the first of his two goals at 7:47. Twenty-one seconds later, Nick Nardecchia scored for the first time in the USHL, pushing in his own rebound after a rush into the Waterloo zone.

Morrissey's second - deflected in from beside the net at 13:20 - appeared to put the game out of reach.

However, the contest nearly turned with an unexpected finish. An extra attacker was on the ice when Wyatt Schingoethe scored on a wraparound with 6:09 remaining. Goaltender Jacob Mucitelli took exception to being pushed back into the net on the play and was given a major penalty for spearing when he regained his footing and came out of the crease to dispute the call.

An overlapping crosschecking penalty gave the Hawks a six-on-three advantage, but Waterloo could not cut into the deficit under those circumstances. The first Lincoln penalty was over when Xander Lamppa scored into an open side with 1:34 to go in the game. Even though the Hawks had one additional power play during the late minutes, Lincoln held on.

The Stars had been denied on all four of their power play attempts in Friday's meeting, but they cashed in on both tries in the rematch. In the first period, the puck bounced to Christian Sarlo near the right hash mark, and he lifted his attempt past Gabriel Carriere at 8:58, stemming the tide after Waterloo had put eight of the first nine shots on net at the other end of the ice.

The teams exchanged goals in the second. Matt Argentina raced behind the Lincoln net and came out on the other side, feathering a pass from one side of the crease to the other. Kyle Haskins was positioned at the opposite post to bang the puck into an open net for the equalizer at 3:26.

However, four-and-a-half minutes later, Lincoln went back to the lead with the first of their four straight goals. Sarlo hit Travis Treloar with a home run pass, and Treloar scored a breakaway goal at 7:57, stickhandling to lift a shot over Carriere's right pad.

Waterloo's pre-Christmas schedule concludes next weekend with a pair of road games against the Omaha Lancers.
