Lincoln Stars News Release
The Lincoln Stars (13-9-1-1) dropped their New Year's Eve contest 7-1 against the Tri-City Storm (19-5-1) on Friday night at Viaero Center.
Jeremy Wilmer scored his 10th goal of the season at 2:54, shortly after being stopped on a breakaway by Cameron Whitehead.
Vinny Borgesi doubled Tri-City's lead, beating Whitehead on a breakaway after a feed from Wilmer at 13:01. The Stars goaltender was peppered in the opening frame, stopping 14 shots.
The Stars were outshot 16-7 in the first period.
Tri-City continued their dominance in the second as Tanner Adams potted a power-play goal 4:52 in. Lleyton Road made it 4-0 on a controversial goal in which Whitehead's left leg was impeded with by Graham Gamache, bringing him to the ice. Road had a wide-open net to shoot at, despite the obvious interference call.
Aidan Thompson scored Lincoln's first goal of the game at 13:20, firing a shot from the left circle past Arsenii Sergeev with the Stars on the power play.
Jo Lemay and Lucas Wahlin were given the assists on Thompson's sixth goal of the year. Wahlin (four games) and Lemay (five games) extended their point streaks on the goal.
The momentum was short-lived as Ilya Nikolaev potted a shorthanded marker at 18:16.
Lincoln trailed 5-1 at the end of the second period and were outshot 23-12 through forty minutes.
The Storm added a pair of power-play goals in the third period after Doug Grimes received a major penalty for kneeing. Road picked up the hat trick with two goals in 3:01.
Whitehead stopped 22 of 27 shots while Jackson Baker provided relief in the third period, stopping six of eight. The Stars host the Omaha Lancers tomorrow night at the Ice Box in an attempt to salvage a weekend sweep.
