Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release
MUSKEGON, Mich. - Lumberjacks forward Quinn Hutson potted the overtime game-winning goal as the Muskegon Lumberjacks conquered the Youngstown Phantoms on New Year's Eve by a final score of 3-to-2 on Friday, Dec. 31 from Mercy Health Arena. Jake Braccini and Phil Tresca also scored for Muskegon, with Braccini scoring his third goal in three consecutive contests. With the win, the Lumberjacks deposit two standings points in the Eastern Conference and officially close the book on 2021.
1st Period
After shaking off some holiday break rust, the Lumberjacks opened up the scoring just 5:30 into the opening period with a goal from Jake Braccini. Tyler Hotson and Owen Mehlenbacher assisted on Braccini's 11th goal of the season, and his third lamplighter in as many games.
Through 20 minutes of action, the Lumberjacks took a 1-to-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
2nd Period
The Phantoms would even the score at 6:46 of the second period with a goal from Jaden Grant to make it a 1-to-1 score. Grant's 11th goal of the season was unassisted.
But just a few minutes later, the Lumberjacks would once again pull in front with a power play goal from Phil Tresca at 8:39 of the middle period. Tresca's 11th of the year was assisted by Jack Williams and Quinn Hutson to make it a 2-to-1 lead for Muskegon.
After two periods of play, the Jacks carried a 2-to-1 lead heading into the intermission.
3rd Period
The only goal in the third period was from Youngstown's Grant Porter on the power play at 8:37 to tie the game 2-to-2. Porter's second goal was assisted by Andrew Centrella and William Whitelaw.
Both teams had plenty of chances in the final period of regulation, but an extra session was needed to decide the winner.
Overtime
After a flurry of chances from each team, Muskegon's Quinn Hutson netted the overtime game-winning goal at 3:51 to send Mercy Health Arena into a New Year's frenzy and win the game for the Lumberjacks by a final score of 3-to-2.
