USHL Waterloo Black Hawks

Hawks Win, Bid 2021 Goodbye

December 31, 2021 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo Black Hawks fans were already celebrating over more than hours before midnight, cheered by their team's 5-3 New Year's Eve victory against the Des Moines Buccaneers at Young Arena.

Prior to Friday, the Hawks' opponents had scored first in four consecutive games, but Waterloo went to a 1-0 edge 8:15 into the contest. Cooper Wylie had the puck above the left circle, and with traffic outside the crease, he slung a wrister that hit the net.

Des Moines tied the score following an unsuccessful Hawks power play at 12:45; Chase Ramsay came out of the penalty box to find himself on a breakaway. Ramsay's shot trickled under Jack Williams, off the post, and across the goal line.

The Hawks then knitted together a pair of scores in 88 seconds, starting at 14:26. First, James Hong was left with time and room below the right faceoff spot and found space to squeeze the puck between Remington Keopple's left arm and body. Then Tyler Procious fed a diagonal pass from the top of the right circle to the opposite post, where Garrett Schifsky was waiting to redirect it into an open side, making the score 3-1.

An odd-man rush allowed Des Moines to draw back within one goal just 19.3 seconds before intermission when Davis Burnside capitalized on a cross-ice setup by Scout Truman.

The Buccaneers tied the game at 4:01 of the second; Henry Bartle created a chance for Paul Davey to send a shot under the crossbar from the right hashmark.

Tyler Kostelecky's unlikely go-ahead goal put Waterloo back in front permanently 1:10 before intermission. Attempting to dump it into the corner, it took a crazy hop off the right wing glass, knuckled toward the net through the right circle, and went into the top corner off of Keopple's pad as the goalie was starting behind the net, and toward the area where he expected the dump in to go.

Just as late as the Hawks scored in the second, Waterloo added another almost as early in the third. At 1:14 and on a power play, Kostelecky wired a low shot from close range which created a rebound to Keopple's right. Jake Rozzi was there to scoop in a shot as the net was being dislodged. A review confirmed the play as a good goal.

The Bucs chances were limited for much of the third period, but they had several opportunities in the late minutes as Williams stacked up a dozen saves and finished the night with a total of 28.

It is the second consecutive year Waterloo has defeated Des Moines on New Year's Eve and the 11th straight Hawks victory on December 31st after the Bucs prevailed in the 2010 edition.

Waterloo's first game during the 2022 portion of the schedule is on the road Friday versus the Sioux Falls Stampede.
