Stars Finalize Opening Night Roster

SALT LAKE CITY - The Salt Lake City Stars, the NBA G League affiliate of the Utah Jazz, announced today the team's roster and coaching staff for the start of the 2021-22 season, which marks their sixth campaign in Salt Lake City.

The team is comprised of 12 players, highlighted by Utah Jazz two-way players Trent Forrest and Malik Fitts, in addition to affiliate players Derrick Alston Jr., Marques Bolden, Nino Johnson and MaCio Teague.

Forrest (6-4, 210, Florida State) enters his second year with the Jazz and Stars after appearing in 30 games last season for the Jazz. Fitts (6-8, 230, St. Mary's) saw action in three games with the LA Clippers and 14 with their G League affiliate in 2020-21.

Alston Jr., son of former NBA forward Derrick Alston, comes to the Stars after a four-year collegiate career at Boise State. Bolden has logged NBA action in seven career games over the last two seasons (2019-21) with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Johnson played in a total of 67 G League games over two seasons with the Memphis Hustle following a four-year career at Southeast Missouri State. Teague was a member of the 2021 NCAA Champion Baylor Bears where he was teammates with 2021 Jazz draft pick Jared Butler.

Brendan Bailey, son of longtime Jazz player and current broadcaster Thurl Bailey, and Zaire Wade, son of Jazz part-owner and NBA legend Dwyane Wade, also made the Stars 2021-22 roster. A 6-8 forward, Bailey played two seasons at Marquette before spending last season with TFT Skopje of the Macedonian Superleague. The 19-year-old Wade spent last season at Brewster Academy (N.H.).

To complete the opening night roster, the Stars waived guards K.J. Feagin and Will Tavares and added guard B.J. Taylor (6-2, 200, Central Florida) out of the available player pool. The Stars full roster is attached.

Head Coach Nathan Peavy will begin his first full season at the helm of the Stars after coaching the team during the abbreviated 2020-21 NBA G League season in Orlando, Fla. Peavy, who enters his fifth season overall with the franchise, also coached the Jazz entry in the 2021 Salt Lake City Summer League.

Peavy's staff includes returning assistants Lowell Egan and Corey Hawkins, as well as assistant coach/director of player development Ronald Allen.

"We are all very excited to see Nathan continue to lead this team and implement the Jazz standards within the Stars program. We are looking forward to watching him and his staff grow throughout this season," said Bart Taylor, general manager of the Salt Lake City Stars and vice president of pro personnel for the Utah Jazz.

Juan Torres returns as director of sports performance, while Dantren Anderson joins the Stars as strength and conditioning coach and equipment manager. Before joining the Stars, Anderson served as the head strength and conditioning coach for Langston University in Langston, Okla.

"Our staff consists of dedicated and passionate individuals who are committed to developing our players, both on and off the court. It will be great to be back in front of our fans in Salt Lake City and continue to build on the foundation we have established. We have some young talent that we are looking forward to developing in order to find ways to help the Jazz achieve their ultimate goals," said Taylor.

The Stars will begin the 2021-22 campaign on a two-game road trip starting this Friday, Nov. 5 against the Oklahoma City Blue at 6 p.m. (MDT). The Stars and Blue will play again on Sunday, Nov. 7 at 10 a.m. (MDT).

The team will host its home opener on Wednesday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. (MDT) vs. the Santa Cruz Warriors at Bruin Arena on the campus of Salt Lake Community College in Taylorsville. Two days later, the teams will square off again on Friday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. at Vivint Arena, home of the Utah Jazz.

The Nov. 17 home opener will mark the first time the Stars have played in Salt Lake City since March 6, 2020. The team finished the 2019-20 campaign with a 30-12 record, the most wins in a single season in Salt Lake City team history and won the first-ever MGM Resorts NBA G League Winter Showcase Tournament.

The Stars of today may become the Jazz of tomorrow. Eleven of the 17 players on the final 2020-21 Utah Jazz roster, including Rudy Gobert, Jordan Clarkson and Royce O'Neale, had NBA G League experience.
