Texas Stars News Release
CEDAR PARK, TX - Matt Fraser's second goal of the night tied the game with less than one second left in regulation as the Texas Stars picked up a point in a 5-4 shootout loss to the Lake Erie Monsters Saturday night at Cedar Park Center.
For the eighth time in their first ten games Texas gave up the first goal of the game. Luke Walker danced around Cam Barker at the blue line, raced down the right wing and beat starting goaltender Jack Campbell with a wrist shot to the bottom left corner of the net. The Stars answered back on a power play goal from Matt Fraser at 16:19, assisted by Francis Wathier and Cam Barker. Texas out-shot the Monsters 21-4 in the opening period.
Lake Erie jumped back into the lead 2:15 into the second period when Monsters captain Bryan Lerg scored his seventh goal of the year. Later in the frame Tomas Vincour tied the game at 2-2, first hitting the right post, then collecting his own rebound and beating goalie Calvin Pickard at 14:45, assisted by Barker and Mike Hedden.
The Monsters never trailed in this game and retook the lead again with two quick strikes in the span of 14 seconds to stun the Stars and their 5,498 home fans. Mark Sgarbossa made it 3-2 at 6:36 and on the very next shift Brad Malone doubled the Lake Erie lead at 6:50; it was the fastest two goals allowed by Texas this year. However, there was plenty of magic left in the game as the hosts dug in for one final surge. The Stars pulled Campbell for the extra attacker and it paid off as Cody Eakin made it 4-3 at 17:57 assisted by Vincour and Brenden Dillon. Then the magical moment game in the third period's final breath. With Campbell again on the bench and the Stars on a late power play, Fraser collected a rebound and backhanded the puck home with less than one second remaining on the game clock, tying the game at 4-4 and sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
After a scoreless overtime period, the game went to a shootout, where the Monsters put on a clinic. Lerg, Malone and Mark Olver each scored on their attempts for Lake Erie, while Reilly Smith was the lone scorer for Texas as the Monsters took the extra point and the win 5-4.
Lake Erie goalie Calvin Pickard earned the victory by making 45 saves on 49 shots through regulation and overtime and then 3-of-4 shootout attempts. Texas netminder Jack Campbell stopped 22-of-26 shots in the game and 1-of-4 shootout attempts as he was tagged with the shootout loss, but still helped the team earn a point. The Stars out-shot the Monsters 49-27 and went 2-for-7 on the power play; they also held Lake Erie without a power play goal, going 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
The Texas Stars will finish their three-in-three weekend set on Sunday, November 11th as they travel to Houston for a 5:05 pm face off with the Aeros at Toyota Center. The Stars next home game comes on Thursday, November 15th as they host the San Antonio Rampage for Food Drive Night, a 7:30 pm faceoff at Cedar Park Center.
