Norfolk Admirals News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Norfolk Admirals (6-4-0-0) surrendered the first four goals of the game as they fell to the Binghamton Senators (5-4-1-1), 4-2, on Saturday night at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. The Admirals continue a four-game road trip tomorrow evening against the Springfield Falcons.
Patrick Maroon and Brandon McMillan netted goals for the Admirals. Igor Bobkov (3-2-0) took the loss after starting the game and allowing three goals on 15 shots in the first period. Frederik Andersen (3-2-0) stopped 11 of 12 shots in the final two periods and did not record a decision. Norfolk out-shot Binghamton, 33-27, in the contest - including 24-12 in the final two periods.
The Senators jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first period. Corey Cowick opened scoring 3:11 into the contest. He sent a shot from the slot that was blocked. However, the puck came back to him in the left circle, and he sent a shot through Bobkov's legs and into the net for a 1-0 Binghamton lead.
Andre Petersson scored a power play goal to double the home team's lead at 7:26. Jakob Silfverberg sent a shot from the left circle that Bobkov stopped. However, the puck ended up on Petersson's stick, and he sent a backhand over Bobkov's right leg for a 2-0 Binghamton lead.
The Senators went ahead, 3-0, late in the first period. Silfverberg picked off a pass in his own zone and began a breakout into the Norfolk zone. He fed a pass from the top of the left circle to Cowick at the top of the right circle, and Cowick quickly sent the puck towards the goal. Andre Benoit redirected the puck past Bobkov at 18:22.
Andersen took over netminding duties to start the second period. However, Binghamton extended its lead to 4-0 just 3:15 into the second stanza when Derek Grant scored on a shorthanded breakaway.
The Admirals got on the board less than two minutes later on Maroon's fifth goal of the season. While on the power play, Gabe Guentzel sent a shot that Maroon deflected past Senators goaltender Robin Lehner at 4:53. Guentzel's assist was his first professional point.
Norfolk then drew to within two goals of Binghamton midway through the third period. Hampus Lindholm sent a pass from the left half wall to McMillan in the left circle. McMillan scored his first goal of the season a 10:05 to cut the visitors' deficit to 4-2.
Despite out-shooting the Senators, 24-12, in the final two periods, the Admirals were unable to completely erase the early four-goal deficit.
Lehner stopped 31 of 33 shots for the win.
Norfolk was 1-for-7 on the power play. Binghamton was 1-for-5.
