
Stars Defeat Mad Ants in Showcase Contest

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Salt Lake City Stars, the official NBA G League affiliate of the Utah Jazz, defeated the Fort Wayne Mad Ants 111-101 tonight in their first game at the 2018 MGM Resorts NBA G League Winter Showcase in Las Vegas.
The Stars (9-9) were led by Isaiah Cousins and Trey Lewis, who each scored 19 points. Cousins, who entered tonight's contest leading the Stars in assists per game (6.3), finished with a game-high eight helpers. Willie Reed, the No. 1 overall selection in the 2018 NBA G League Draft, tallied his 10th double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Tony Bradley, currently on assignment from the Utah Jazz, recorded 15 points and nine rebounds. Grayson Allen, also on assignment from the Utah Jazz, scored 16 points and grabbed five rebounds, connecting on four three-pointers. Utah Jazz two-way player Tyler Cavanaugh tallied eight points and seven rebounds, and Utah Jazz two-way player Naz Mitrou-Long finished with nine points and four assists.
The Mad Ants (8-8) were paced by Omari Johnson, who scored a game-high 24 points (14 in the first quarter) on 6-of-12 (.500) from three-point range. Alize Johnson, currently on assignment from the Indiana Pacers, posted a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds to go with seven assists, and Indiana Pacers two-way player Davon Reed scored 20 points and collected seven boards. Indiana Pacers two-way player Edmond Sumner recorded 19 points (13 in the fourth quarter) and three steals.
The Mad Ants jumped out to a six-point lead (27-21) in the first quarter, but the Stars ended the frame on a 10-2 run to take a two-point lead (31-29) at the break. Salt Lake City owned a one-point advantage (43-42) with 3:58 remaining in the second quarter and extended its lead courtesy of a 7-0 run, ending the first half with a 10-point edge (58-48). The Stars led by as many as 19 points (71-52) in the third quarter, but the Mad Ants went on a 13-0 run to cut the lead to single digits (71-65). The Stars responded and increased their lead to 12 points in the fourth frame, ultimately securing their sixth double-digit victory of the season.
The Stars shot 50 percent from the field (39-of-78 FG), marking their fifth game this season shooting at least 50 percent from the floor. Salt Lake City held the advantage in three-point percentage (.419-.375), rebounds (47-35), assists (23-21) and points in the paint (44-36). Fort Wayne logged more steals (12-5) and blocks (6-4).
The Stars will wrap up play at the 2018 MGM Resorts NBA G League Winter Showcase on Saturday, Dec. 22, against the Delaware Blue Coats (Philadelphia 76ers affiliate) at 7 p.m. (MT). The game will be broadcast on Facebook Live, which can be accessed via the Salt Lake City Stars Facebook page.
