Lincoln Stars News Release
LINCOLN, Neb. - The Lincoln Stars (8-13-1) ran out of time during their rally, falling 3-2 against the Des Moines Buccaneers (13-10-3) on Friday night at the Ice Box.
Reminiscent of Sunday afternoon's game against Fargo, Lincoln couldn't generate offensive zone pressure and fell behind after a goal scored by the visitors. Zach Faremouth took advantage of a Stars miscue, notching his second tally against Lincoln this season at 10:07.
Lincoln killed off a penalty they took in the opening 30 seconds and did not score on their lone chance on the power play. The Stars were outshot 8-7 in the opening 20 minutes.
The home team came out flying in the middle period, dominating the early portion with plenty of chances off the rush. James Stefan eventually broke through, snapping a wrist shot past the blocker-side of Remington Koepple. Spencer Smith and Stanley Cooley picked up the assists on Stefan's fourth goal of the season at 4:56.
However, the Bucs would snatch the momentum back with Lucas Mercuri's ninth goal of the year at 17:45. Lincoln fired nine shots on goal in the second period while Des Moines added twelve. Ryan Ouellette stopped a penalty shot from Alex Laferriere at 7:02.
Laferriere would have his revenge 11:34 into the third period, striking on the man-advantage following a major penalty assessed to Cross Hanas. Hanas was given a game misconduct for head contact 19 seconds earlier.
Lincoln would get within one at 18:45 with Zach Urdahl's ninth goal of the season. Cooley and Aidan Thompson got the helpers. Sam Renlund was ejected after a hit from behind on Cooley, but the Stars ran out of time on the five-minute major.
Lincoln was 1-for-5 on the power play and 2-for-3 on the penalty kill. Des Moines outshot the Stars 28-23.
