St. Vincent Leads Rage Past Amarillo
January 3, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Rocky Mountain Rage News Release
Broomfield, Colo. - The Rocky Mountain Rage defeated the Amarillo Gorillas tonight at the Broomfield Event Center 3-1 behind the effort of goaltender Guy St. Vincent. It marked his first start of the year for the Rage.
The No. 1 ranked Rage (Central Hockey League coach's poll) improved their record to 21-4-2 (44 points) for first place in the Northwest Division and kept the top winning percentage in the league (.815). The Gorillas fell to 9-17-4 (22 points) for fourth place in the Southwest Division
Amarillo defenseman Trevor Read gave the Gorillas an early edge with an unassisted goal at 8:49, but the lead did not last long. Rocky Mountain's Daymen Rycroft picked up the puck from Trevor Weisgerber and wristed top shelf just 16 seconds later before it bounced out of net. It marked Rycroft's team-leading 19th goal on the season.
Gorillas goaltender Dan Bauer and Rage goaltender St. Vincent led the second period keeping both teams scoreless. He joined the team following a 15-game suspension assessed to goaltender Terry Dunbar in a game against the New Mexico Scorpions Dec. 1. Dunbar will be eligible to play again by the Jan. 12th game against the Colorado Eagles in Loveland.
The Rage took the lead in the third period at 1:52 when right winger Nathan Rosychuk beat one man out front, faked a shot to the right of Bauer and slipped the puck in net past the left goal post. Rosychuk was reactivated today after sitting out on 14-day injured reserve.
In the middle of the period the Rage took a two goal lead. Rocky Mountain's captain Brent Cullaton picked up an Amarillo turnover from center ice. With two Gorillas defenders trailing behind him, Cullaton skated in all alone and wristed the puck in net at 10:34.
In the 13 minute mark, the Rage was assessed two penalties within seven seconds of each other. Amarillo tallied six shots on net in the two man advantage, but St. Vincent kept Amarillo scoreless to win it for the Rage.
What you may have missed: Bill Vandermeer, the younger brother of last season's Rage captain Dan Vandermeer played tonight as a right wing for the Amarillo Gorillas.
The Rage returns to the road Jan. 5-6 to take on the Wichita Thunder and Oklahoma City Blazers, respectively. Fans can listen in on The New ESPN Radio 1600 or tune in to CHL Network at www.RockyMountainRage.com.
