St. Cloud Rox Home Opener Ends in 6-3 Victory

St. Cloud, Minn. - The St. Cloud Rox held their 2013 home opener Friday night at Joe Faber Field against the Thunder Bay Border Cats making an outstanding first appearance at home. The Rox pulled out a win defeating the Border Cats 6-3 and capped off the night with a post-game fireworks show presented by Coborn's.

The ceremonial first pitch was thrown out by former Minnesota Twins' infielder Greg Gagne to start off the Rox home opener as he threw it right down the middle for a strike.

Thunder Bay started off the first inning taking a 1-0 lead over the Rox as the Border Cats' Dylan Becker hit a sacrifice fly out to center field scoring their runner on third.

St. Cloud did not post a run until the second inning where they took a 2-1 lead. Charlie Morgan (Jr., Wake Forest Univ.) led off for the Rox hitting a double and was followed by Adam Martin (Jr., Western Carolina Univ.) as he hit a single to advance Morgan. Garrett Fischer (Jr., St. Cloud State) went to pinch run for Morgan and was brought home on a fielder's choice by Conor Keniry (Jr., Wake Forest Univ.). With two outs on the board for St. Cloud, Eric Loxtercamp (R-So., St. Cloud State) hits a double scoring Keniry for the lead.

The Rox would hold Thunder Bay to no runs to then extend their lead 4-1 in the third inning. It was Tim Colwell (Jr., North Dakota State) leading off for St. Cloud in the bottom of the third as he hit a single to get the bats going. Colwell would then steal second base before advancing to third on a single by Devin Pearson (Fr., University of California). Leal was up next hitting yet another single for the Rox scoring Colwell on the hit. Martin smashed a double out to right center scoring the Rox second run of the inning.

On a 1-3 count at the plate St. Cloud's Chris Paul (So., University of California) hit a single home run to extend the Rox lead 5-1.

In the bottom of the sixth inning Colwell hit a double to score the Rox final run of the game taking a 6-1 lead over the Border Cats.

Thunder Bay would try and come back in the top of the ninth as they put up two runs making it a 6-3 final score.

Starting on the mound for St. Cloud in their 2013 home opener was Kyle Fischer (Jr., St. Cloud State) allowing only one run in 5.0 innings of work to record his first win of the season. Dalton Sawyer (Fr., Univ. of Minnesota) saw some action pitching 3.0 innings and Dominic Reed (Fr., DMACC) for 0.1 as well. Adam Maxon (Jr., Jacksonville Univ.) finished the game for the Rox on the mound pitching 0.2 innings and recording the save.

The St. Cloud Times Rox player of the game was Adam Martin as he had an outstanding performance going 3-for-4 including a double and one RBI to bat .750.

The Rox (2-1, 2-1 North) will be back in action Saturday, June 1st as they host the Waterloo Bucks. Game time is slated for 6:05 p.m. It will be a Rox Replica Jersey Giveaway night presented by Coborn's and the St. Cloud Times as the first 500 kids 14 and under will receive the giveaway.
