Battle Creek Battle Jacks News Release
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. - The Battle Creek Bombers (2-1) outlasted the Eau Claire Express (0-2) in a twelve-inning marathon on Friday night. Matthew Fears delivered the game-winning single to left field in the bottom of the twelfth off Express' pitcher Jake Cole (0-1).
Eau Claire rallied to take a 3-2 lead in the sixth but gave one back in the sixth and seventh innings, trailing 4-3 heading to the ninth. Bombers' pitcher Brian Heldman was four outs into a five out save before surrendering a run in the ninth after a HBP, walk, and single off the bat of Mike Porcaro.
Bombers starter Alex Tukey tossed four strong innings, allowing just one run and two hits while striking out three. Ben Dartnell (W, 1-0) pitched a scorless tenth, eleventh, and twelfth en route to his first win of the season.
Battle Creek had an opportunity to win it in the tenth with runners on first and third and just one out. Cole faked a pickoff attempt to third and caught Fears leaning at first. As first baseman Tyler Hermann chased Fears down to second, Kade Scivicque bolted for home in an attempt to end the game. Hermann gunned Scivicque down at the plate, but Fears would get his redemption in the twelfth.
Scivicque showed his skills behind the plate as well, gunning down three potential bag-swipers including two on back-to-back at bats in the seventh. Tyler Sullivan went 2-3 with two walks and scored three runs in the game including the winning run.
The Bombers go for the short sweep of Eau Claire on Saturday. Toledo's Kyle Slack will get his first start of the season for Battle Creek. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 ET with postgame State Farm fireworks planned.
The Battle Creek Bombers are members of the Northwoods League that has more teams, plays more games, and draws more fans than any other summer collegiate baseball league in America. For information on tickets call (269) 962-0735 or visit BattleCreekBombers.com.
