Alexandria Blue Anchors News Release
Behind the brilliant pitching of Cameron Mingo (Princeton) and Zac Custer (Dakota Wesleyan), the Alexandria Blue Anchors (1-1) earned their first victory in team history on Thursday night with a 7-2 final over the Duluth Huskies (1-1) at Knute Nelson.
Mingo (1-0) scattered five hits and struck out four over six innings to earn the win and Custer earned a three-inning save as the Anchors evened their season-opening three-game set at one.
For the second straight night, Alexandria opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. Jake Bergren (Minnesota) continued his hot start with a one-out single and stole second before Andrew Sohn (Western Michigan) singled him to third. Clean-up hitter Albert Baur (Newberry College) began his big night with a sacrifice fly and the Anchors took a 1-0 lead.
Alexandria doubled the advantage in the second when Kris Goodman (Iowa) singled home Jamie Ritchie (Belmont), who had reached with a two-out double.
However, the Huskies responded in the top of the sixth as Mingo ran into trouble for the first time in the ballgame. Conor Szcerba opened the frame with a single and scored on a two-run homer by Florida Southern teammate Keith Curcio to tie the game at 2. Duluth would load the bases, but Mingo was able to get out of the jam by striking out Alex Wojciechowski with his final pitch of the evening.
The Blue Anchors responded in the bottom of the sixth with three runs that would turn the game. Baur led off with a homer out to right to give Alexandria a 3-2 lead, and with one out, a walk to Andrew Mulato (Michigan St..) and double by Tim Cusick (Dakota Wesleyan) put a pair in scoring position. Ritchie followed with a single of his own to plate the pair and put the homestanders in front by three.
The Anchors scored the final two runs of the evening in the seventh on a Baur double, for his third RBI of the night, and a Mulato groundout.
"It felt good getting it out of the way, with it being my first start" Mingo stated about his quality start.
Mingo went on to say "We've got a lot of potential to really play well the rest of the season."
The rubber match of the three-game set will be Friday at 7:05pm at Knute Nelson Memorial Field.
