Erie SeaWolves News Release

Erie dropped game one of the four game set with the Richmond Flying Squirrels in a close 4-3 affair on Thursday night at Jerry Uht Park.

Richmond was quick to open the scoring in the first inning when Engel Beltre lead off with a double and was moved to second on a Rando Moreno sacrifice bunt. Hunter Cole then smacked a double of his own that plated Beltre from second as the 'Squirrels jumped ahead 1-0.

The Squirrels clung to the one run lead until the fourth inning when Erie struck back. A one out single by Jeff McVaney and a walk to Dominic Ficociello left two men aboard for Tony Thomas. Thomas put Erie on the board as he singled home McVaney and tied the ballgame. Miguel Gonzalez then sent a high chopper to the right side of the infield that scored Ficociello and gave the 'Wolves a 2-1 lead.

Richmond then battled back as they plated a run in the sixth to tie the ballgame back up. A Beltre single and a sacrifice bunt once again put a runner in scoring position for the Squirrels. It was Hunter Cole who then singled to score Beltre and tied the game up 2-2.

The Squirrels took the lead in the seventh inning, and knocked Erie starter Chad Green out of the game. Three consecutive singles by Austin Slater, Myles Schroder and Juan Ciriaco opened the inning. The Ciriaco single plated Slater, and Richmond pulled ahead 3-2.

The Squirrels added an insurance run in the eighth when Cole tripled and was brought home on a Mitch Delfino single.

Erie pulled closer in the eighth inning as when Wynton Bernard reached on an error and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from Tony Thomas. However, it would not be enough as Richmond held Erie scoreless in the ninth and took game one, a 4-3 final.

Green (2-14) took the loss allowing three runs on ten hits with no walks while fanning four.
