Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
ERIE, PA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels pounded the Erie SeaWolves, 14-0, salvaging the finale of a four-game series on Thursday night at Jerry Uht Park. The win allowed the Squirrels to avoid a four-game sweep, recording their 10th shutout of the season in their final road game of the year.
The Squirrels used the long-ball to take their first lead of the series in the first inning against Erie left-hander Jon Kibler. With one out, Brad Boyer cracked his second homer of the season to right-center field. A batter later, Conor Gillaspie pulled a solo-shot down the right-field line for a 2-0 lead.
Richmond broke the game open and chased Kibler in the fifth inning. Juan Ciriaco led off the inning with a double and things went downhill from there for Erie. Tyler La Torre reached on a throwing error and Ryan Lormand ripped an RBI double. Brock Bond doubled down the right-field line to plate two more and send Kibler to the showers with the Squirrels leading 5-0. Right-hander Rob Waite came on in relief, but Thomas Neal supplied an RBI double and Clay Timpner capped a five-run inning with an RBI single.
Kibler (4-7) absorbed the loss for the SeaWolves, charged with six runs - five earned - on six hits over four-plus innings. Lost amid the offense was a battling five-inning performance from Squirrels' right-hander Mike MacDonald (5-8). He earned the win in his final outing of the season, working five scoreless innings. He allowed five hits, walked three and struck out two.
The Squirrels were back it in the sixth, establishing a new franchise record with seven runs in the frame. It also marked the first time on the year that the Squirrels had batted around in successive innings. In the inning, Gillaspie contributed an RBI single, Timpner drove in two runs with a single and Ciriaco added a two-run home run.
Waite took the brunt of the rally, hit with seven runs - two earned - on six hits over just 1 2/3 innings. Right-handers Mitch Lively and Rafael Cova each worked two scoreless innings of relief to complete the 10th shutout of the season for the Squirrels.
The Squirrels will travel back to Richmond, VA, to open their final four-game series of the season against the Bowie Baysox (Baltimore) Orioles at The Diamond on Friday night at 7:05 PM. Tickets are available for the final four games of the season and can be purchased by calling (804) 359-FUNN (3866).
