Altoona Curve News Release
BOWIE, Md. - The Baysox used two three-run innings to sink the Curve in the series finale and went on to defeat Altoona, 7-2, at Prince George's Stadium on Thursday night. Jeff Locke (3-2) suffered his first defeat since August 6 when he lost at Harrisburg.
Eastern League home runs leader Joel Guzman once again put the Baysox on the scoreboard in the first as he connected for a three-run home run off of Locke with one down in the first.
Locke retired the last two men he faced in the first and actually went on a streak to retire six in a row while the Curve plated a run in the top of the third inning. With two down in the top half of the inning, Chase d'Arnaud singled and then stole second base, his 33rd steal of the year. Josh Harrison singled him in with a ball back through the middle and Altoona was within two at, 3-1.
After another scoreless inning from Locke, Miles Durham hit his 10th home run of the year, a solo shot to left, to lead off the fourth and the Curve were right back in it at, 3-2.
Trailing by a run entering the bottom of the fourth, Locke retired the first two men both on groundouts to shortstop Jordy Mercer, but then hit Steve Lerud to extend the inning. After hitting Lerud, Bowie went on to hit three doubles in a row to plate three runs and take a, 6-2 lead.
Altoona threatened in the top half of the fifth, loading up the bases with two away, but Jim Negrych popped out to short to end the inning and the threat.
In the bottom of the fifth, Ryan Adams led off the inning with a solo home run to put Bowie up five, 7-2. Locke finished five innings and allowed seven runs on eight hits while striking out four. Ramon Aguero, Michael Colla and Daniel Moskos each pitched scoreless innings for Altoona
The Curve did put three men on with two away in the ninth but Andrew Lambo grounded out to end the game.
Mercer had four hits in the game and it is his second four-hit game in as many weeks. Altoona had 11 hits as a team in the game and even out-hit Bowie, 11-9. In all three losses during the series, the Curve wound up out-hitting Bowie.
Altoona (80-58) returns home on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. to face off with Reading for the final homestand of the regular season. The Curve sends RHP Jared Hughes (12-7, 4.23) to the hill while Reading will send Tyler Cloyd (0-1, 6.00) to the mound for his second Double-A game.
The Curve's Gift Card Grab will take place after Friday night's game with Reading. Selected fans will have the opportunity to head down on the field after the game and pick up as many gift cards as they can from the $10,000 worth spread around the outfield grass. It is also the Altoona First Savings Bank "First Game of the Month" on Friday at BCB. Kids can run the bases after the game as well.
Radio coverage begins at 6 p.m. on flagship ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network. Great seats for the entire homestand are still available by calling 877.99.CURVE, visiting www.AltoonaCurve.com or by stopping into the box office at BCB.
