Trenton Thunder News Release
Trenton, NJ- Two new pitchers and one familiar face pushed Trenton to a 3-2 win over Akron on Thursday night. On the final home game of the regular season Justin Christian smacked his third homerun in two days and newcomers Adam Olbrychowski and Pat Venditte provided shutout relief to shrink the Trenton's (81-57) magic number to three.
Trailing 2-1 entering the eighth Justin Christian tied the game with a home run over the left field wall. Austin Krum followed with a double and advanced to third base on a fielding error. Brewer drove in Krum on a base hit to right field and the Thunder pulled ahead 3-2.
For the only time in the series, the Thunder scored first as Daniel Brewer singled up the middle and scored on an Austin Romine RBI double in the bottom of the first inning. It would be the only run Trenton mustered off Akron LHP Matt Packer. The left-hander shut down the Thunder for one run on five hits and struck out eight batters over seven innings.
LHP Manuel Banuelos made his second home start for the Thunder and pitched 4 2/3 innings before leaving due to a high pitch count. Banuelos fell victim to an error in the fourth inning, which allowed the Aeros to plate two runs and take a 2-1 lead after four innings. Banuelos struck out six in his third Double-A start. In three starts with the Thunder, Banuelos has fanned a combined 16 batters.
RHP Connor Graham (3-6) came out of the bullpen for Akron in the bottom of the eighth inning and allowed two runs in the loss. The Thunder bullpen of Venditte, Olbrychowski and Ryan Pope tosses 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Pope pitched the ninth for his 17th save of the season.
The Thunder will play their final series of the season at New Britain against the Rock Cats starting on Friday night at 7:05 PM. RHP Dellin Betances will start for Trenton, while New Britain will give the ball to RHP Bruce Pugh. Catch all the action on 107.7 FM The Bronc or online at www.trentonthunder.com.
