Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springfield, MO - The Cardinals looked to rebound against NW Arkansas on Wednesday night after a long day including a 12 hour bus ride and a 3:22 minute 5-2 loss on Tuesday.
From the outset, both pitchers, Brian Broderick for the Cardinals and Mike Montgomery for the Naturals, were firing strikes and runs would be hard to come by.
It would be the Naturals that would strike first, but it was not until the 4th inning against Brian Broderick. With two outs, Eric Hosmer reached on an error and it would cost the Cardinals as the very next batter, major league rehabber Josh Fields, lined a double into left center scoring Hosmer to put NW Arkansas up 1-0.
After not getting a base runner in the first three innings against Mike Montgomery, the Cardinals offense came alive in the 4th as Daryl Jones was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and went to third on a single by Matt Carpenter. Andrew Brown followed with an RBI single to left to tie the game 1-1. After a fly out, Xavier Scruggs blasted a three-run homer, his 6th of the year, to left center field to give the Cardinals a 4-1 lead.
In the top of the 5th, Paulo Orlando singled into center field, stole second and singled on a base hit to right field by Anthony Seratelli to cut the Cardinals lead to two runs, 4-2.
The Cardinals took advantage of a Naturals miscue in the bottom of the 5th as Peter Kozma reached on an error by Seratelli at short with two outs. Matt Carpenter then tripled into right center field to plate Kozma making the score 5-2. Andrew Brown then drew a walk before Aaron Luna blasted another three-run homer, his 14th of the season, to give Springfield a six run lead, 8-2.
Brian Broderick would take over from there retiring 14 of the next 15 batters he faced to throw his second nine-inning complete game of the season and winning his sixth straight start in an 8-2 Springfield win.
The Cardinals are just two game back of the North Division lead with their victory over NW Arkansas. Should the Naturals win the second half, Springfield holds an 8.5 game lead over Tulsa for the next best record in the North Division playoff race.
Springfield will continue their four game series with NW Arkansas Thursday night. The Cardinals will send left hander Ryan Kulik (7-2) to the mound against left hander John Lamb (0-1) for the Naturals. Game time is at 7:10pm at Hammons Field.
The end of summer can mean only one thing, time for cooler weather. Bud Light will be giving out 2,500 Winter Caps on Thursday night for fans 21 and older. And the ever popular Johnsonville "Buck a Brat" night featuring $1 Johnsonville bratwurst will be available for fans to take advantage of one final time in the regular season.
